About Jacobo

I travelled to Colombia to work as a freelance journalist in 2020. I had researched my plans, practiced my Spanish and once arrived, spent the next ten months travelling most of its beautiful country. The experience really was a formative one and I met so many good people. My Spanish naturally improved massively while there, but most importantly it motivated me to double my efforts in Spanish when I arrived back in the UK. My focus is on GCSEs, which I took when I was in school; I studied German and passed, but can barely remember a word of it and never felt motivated to learn a language until being an adult. Our classes will help you pass your exams, if that is your goal, and motivate you to want to learn and retain Spanish for practical reasons too.

Hi there,

I'm here to help you excel in Spanish, especially in your GCSE exams. My time in Colombia, living in both cities and villages, gave me a genuine understanding of language and its importance in connecting with people.

Beyond that, my background in journalism adds a unique perspective to learning. It's not just about teaching phrases; it's about delving into the culture and applying Spanish in real-world scenarios. And if you're considering a future in journalism, I've got some insights to share.

Spain is a place close to my heart, whether it's holiday getaways or planning the next visit. So, our Spanish lessons won’t be just about textbooks; they'll be about real-life, enriching experiences and how to get by when you’re abroad.

My approach to teaching is that we first need to determine your objective and set a realistic plan and timescale to achieving it. When I was first learning Spanish, I did not set myself a deadline for reaching specific objectives because I hadn't anyone's guidance. In hindsight, I see this is essential, and with my assistance in setting you a plan to reach well-defined objectives it means you will accumulate small victories. Language learning is often described as a journey, and adding these wins will see your motivation and commitment to studying Spanish continue long-term.

I will use textbooks, music, videos, excerpts from books, test papers and role-play speech scenarios during our class. I will set you homework that will incorporate various learning techniques, that will test your entire language proficiency. Between classes your abilities will be challenged, but you will never have to hesitate to reach out to me as I will be here to offer help and encouragement.
