About Bala
Hi, I’m a UI/UX designer with 12+ years of experience, currently working at Cisco. Over the years, I’ve held full-time roles at KPMG, Juniper, Wipro, and Moody’s, gaining a deep understanding of what companies truly expect from UI/UX designers and what it takes to succeed in the industry.
One key insight from my experience is that many companies hire UI designers under the title of UX designers, especially at the entry level. However, becoming a true User Experience Designer requires hands-on experience and a deep understanding of user behavior—something that can’t be mastered overnight. Unfortunately, many aspiring designers get misled by the title and focus on the wrong skills.
The real key to breaking into UX is a strong foundation in UI design. Mastering typography, color theory, grids, layout composition, iconography, and illustration is what sets you apart in the job market. High proficiency in design tools like Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD, combined with a basic understanding of UX principles, is often enough to land a well-paying job. On the other hand, a purely UX-focused skillset without UI expertise can be much harder to sell.
My goal is to help aspiring designers build the right skills and position themselves for success in the industry.

As a self-taught designer, I understand how challenging it can be to learn UI design. Unlike other art forms, UI design is best learned through real projects, and self-learning can often feel frustrating and unproductive—especially with today’s high industry expectations.
