About Seyi

Hi! My name is Seyi, and I'm a junior doctor. I decided to study medicine after realising I could use my problem-solving skills with my love of helping people together. As of now I am planning to specialise in working with adolescents as I am a big advocate of teenagers and young people and all they can achieve both personally and within society. I have been working mentoring, coaching and tutoring for the past 7 years and in this time have affirmed two beliefs I have had from the beginning: 1) Each student will have their own unique learning style and 2) Every student has the ability to succeed and exceed all expectations that anyone may have of them, especially once they believe in themselves and have confidence in themselves and their ability. I therefore aim to help my students not just understand things that they may struggle with but also help build them up so that they realise that once they keep persisting in their efforts, they can achieve anything that they put their mind to. I believe that every young person has the potential to be extraordinary in a variety of ways both inside and outside the classroom and as a tutor I take great pleasure and find great honour in being able to be part of that journey.

About the lesson

I start my sessions with a student by talking to them and their parent/guardian about their personal concerns and addressing my role in helping the student progress. This first session will tend to include a short benchmark test and VAK test for the student in order for me to have an idea of the level at which the student is currently working, the areas in which I can help the student progress and the way in which they learn. Most lessons involve us going over something the student finds difficult or over some work that they will be doing in the future as preparation. Alternatively, some students prefer to have a more set structure where we work through a scheme of work over a set number of lessons. The setting of homework is optional and up to each guardian/student, but I encourage students to memorise key to know information. I monitor progress through these memorisation exercises as well as through school tests, session progression and tests that I set for the student myself. I am a big advocate for increasing self-confidence in young people and thus adopt a 'positivity only' rule in my lessons. I aim to encourage learning through positive reinforcement throughout the lesson and by encouraging parents to congratulate and support the students at home, with issues being approached in a 'what went well?' and 'how can we (me as a tutor, the parent/guardian in supporting and the student in their attitudes and work) improve?'.
