About Yi-Hsuan

I am a professional violinist and educator with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Violin Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and a Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music (MSM).
As an active orchestral musician, I have performed with orchestras in both the United States and Taiwan, including as a substitute violinist with the New World Symphony and as a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. I have also served as Concertmaster of the Miami Music Festival Orchestra. My musical training and performing career have given me extensive experience in solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire, as well as professional audition preparation.
Having studied in both Taiwan and the United States, I understand that every student comes from a different background and develops at a different pace. I aim to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring their own musical ideas.
Whether you are beginning violin, looking to strengthen your technique, preparing for an orchestra audition or performance, or pursuing music at an advanced level, I will work with you to establish clear goals and find an approach that fits your individual needs. My goal is not only to help you become a stronger violinist, but also to help you develop the confidence and independence to continue growing as a musician.

About the lesson

My teaching approach focuses on helping students build strong technical foundations while developing confidence, curiosity, and independence. I believe effective learning is not simply about practicing more hours, but understanding how to practice efficiently. I help students identify specific challenges, set achievable goals, and develop strategies to solve problems independently. Small improvements each day can build both motivation and long-term progress.
A typical lesson includes technical fundamentals, repertoire, musical interpretation, and practical practice strategies based on each student's individual needs. Rather than simply telling students what is right or wrong, I encourage them to listen critically, ask questions, experiment with different approaches, and understand the reasoning behind musical decisions. For students preparing for performances or auditions, I also incorporate strategies for confidence building, performance anxiety, and mental preparation.
What sets me apart is my combination of professional performance experience and academic research. My doctoral research focused on orchestral audition preparation, effective practice strategies, and performance psychology. Having received my musical education in both Taiwan and the United States also allows me to combine discipline and attention to detail with individuality and musical expression.
I welcome students at different levels, from beginners building their foundations to intermediate and advanced violinists preparing for auditions, competitions, orchestra, or college study. Lessons are individualized according to each student's level and goals. Ultimately, my goal is for students to become their own teachers—to understand their strengths, develop their own musical ideas, and gain the skills and confidence to continue growing independently.
