About Isobel
My name is Isobel Hughes and I am an opera singer based in North London. I achieved my undergraduate degree in vocal performance (BMus Hons) at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, followed by a master's in vocal performance (MMus) and a master's in operatic performance (MA) from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. So much of my passion for performance comes from a love of study and academia. I love musical analysis and researching each piece's history, I really feel that each new bit of information I find informs my approach to performance and makes me a better musician. However, I did not always feel this way. At school, I just wanted to perform and really struggled with the academic side of musical study. I wasn't sure how to write essays or analyse music effectively. It wasn't until I went to university that I developed these skills, and I wish I had learned them sooner. This is why I am so passionate about helping A Level and GCSE students with their academic work, because I myself struggled with it but have grown to truly enjoy it.

As well as my academic experience, I also have two years of experience as a one-to-one teaching assistant in classrooms across England and Wales. I have worked in both mainstream education as well as with SEN students, and feel incredibly strongly that it is the job of the teacher to adapt their teaching techniques to reach their student, rather than the other way around. Music A Level and GCSE involves many moving parts. Not only must you become a strong performer in your chosen instrument, but you must also learn music theory, composition, and how to describe and discuss pieces (often including instruments that you do not play) in an essay format. This can be overwhelming, and so it is my aim to help my students get to grips with each of these areas and see how they connect. It is my hope that this will not only improve their skills as music academics, but as musicians overall.
