About James

I am currently reading Natural Sciences (Geography and Biology) BSc at Durham University and have a wide range of experience writing and redrafting personal statements. I am a current Laidlaw Scholar in research and leadership so am very passionate about education and academics. I have read and redrafted many personal statements for both science and arts subjects.

About the lesson

To help improve your personal statement I will first read over your current draft and determine what the strengths/weaknesses are. Then, we will meet on zoom to discuss how to improve your personal statement and I will send a copy of it back to you with comments and suggestions for improvements. If needed, I can send some example personal statements to you to help you write and redraft your statement.

If the personal statement is very good we may only need one session but if multiple rewrites or further help is needed I am more than happy to have multiple sessions. Some sessions may take less than an hour, however I will be spending considerably more time reading through and checking your statement so I feel an hour's fee is reasonable.

Areas I will help you improve your personal statement in are:
1) Ordering experiences in terms of relevance to your chosen course
2) Helping you showcase your achievements in the best possible way
3) Suggesting further activities you could do to include in your personal statement
4) Helping you to cut down your personal statement to reach the word count
5) Proofreading your personal statement to check the spelling and grammar
