About Emily

My approach to teaching guitar is rooted in patience, empathy, and a belief that everyone can make meaningful progress with the right guidance and environment. Over the years, I’ve worked with a diverse range of students—from complete beginners to those preparing for advanced music exams—and I’ve found that success starts with building a strong technical foundation while maintaining a spirit of curiosity and play. I begin by focusing on essential elements like chord fluency, right-hand coordination, rhythm, and tone production, always linking these skills to songs and styles that the student finds exciting. We may explore fingerstyle patterns using acoustic ballads, or practice barre chords through rock or R&B grooves—whatever keeps the student engaged and learning. Theory is introduced through real-life musical application, not as a separate subject. Students learn about harmony while analyzing a song they love or gain a sense of form while writing their own chord progression. One of my proudest teaching moments was watching a shy student evolve into a confident solo performer by creating original songs and performing them at local open mics. That kind of growth goes beyond technique—it reflects emotional maturity and self-assurance, which I believe are as important as mastering scales or chords. I use a range of tools to meet each student where they are: visual charts, audio tracks, loopers, and even songwriting prompts. I also coach students on how to practice efficiently, overcome frustration, and stay connected to their passion. Whether you’re working toward a performance, building songwriting skills, or just starting your musical journey, I offer structured, personalized lessons with a focus on expressive, sustainable growth.

My guitar teaching approach focuses on transforming your enthusiasm into practical skill through a blend of clear fundamentals and musical context. We begin with posture, hand positioning, strumming patterns, and chord shapes, ensuring each technical element serves a musical purpose.

These foundational skills are immediately applied to songs and styles you find inspiring—be it blues, indie, funk, or fingerpicking—to keep lessons relevant and motivating. I emphasize a practical understanding of music theory, showing how chords connect into progressions and how rhythm shapes the feel of a piece. Clear communication is vital—I explain everything in simple, jargon-free language and frequently check in to see how concepts resonate with you. I customize my teaching to match your preferred learning style, incorporating visuals, audio aids, or hands-on practice as needed.

Learning guitar should feel like unlocking creative potential, not solving a mystery. To foster motivation, I share relatable success stories from famous guitarists and everyday students, demonstrating that progress is achievable with the right approach. Beyond playing, I incorporate broader musicianship skills such as tone shaping, performance prep, effective practice strategies, reading music or chord charts, and creative jamming techniques.
