Ms. Lina and I met in an English-Spanish Learning seminar and when she noticed I was falling behind, offered help and was instrumental in keeping me up with the material and class as a whole. One area I struggled with was conjugations, and the writing-then-speaking method used in the class was getting me nowhere. Recognizing that I was a more visual-mathematical person, she constructed a chart filled with the more “difficult” words to conjugate (like tener and ir) with present, past, and future-tense for different pronouns that finally made sense to me and is no longer something I struggle with. She also helped me understand how some translations aren’t 1-to-1, such as “I am 27 years old” is “Tengo 27 años” even though it doesn’t make sense in English to say “I have 27 years.” These are just a couple of the many examples of how she is knowledgeable enough about the languages and about people to offer a learning experience tailored to the individual’s style of learning.
