When teaching individually my style involves:
- adapting to the needs of the individual
- focus on problem solving, self directed research
- very casual, personal, and extremely patient
- practical solutions and strategies for optimized workflow
- understanding or theory and reasoning behind how things work and why methods are used
- deep dives into larger conceptual elements when useful (such as the history visual effects of production, or history of video game graphics and rendering)
I am a teacher with 20+ years of experience, and have taught hundreds of students who are now professionals working on video games, feature films, apps, and web-development. I am highly knowledgeable and a generalist in computer graphics and programming.
My students are employed at most major of the worlds leading game, vfx, and animation studios. Virtually every triple-A video game, and major motion picture, features work by at least one artist who was once a student of mine. I have extensive testimonials and references to back up this claim, and I am highly recommend, as a teacher, by many industry professionals. Testimonials and recommendations are here:
Verification for these testimonials can be seen on linkedin: (concealed information)
References and direct contact with former student who recommend me can potentially be arranged if necessary.
I am also listed on the instructor page at Think Tank Training Centre, which in my opinion, is the world's best school for VFX or game art. (concealed information)
(Think Tank has an unmatched >95% student employment success rate, with incredible dedication and caring for each and every student. Think Tank is, to my knowledge, the only school in this field where the owners of the school personally know and care about every single student inside their school. Their instructors, on a whole, are outstanding.)
I am currently teaching and mentoring student online. I also provide consulting, pipeline optimization, problem solving, and technical troubleshooting to both studios and individuals.
Although superprof.ca forced me to enter a non-zero lesson price, all lessons are currently free.
For the time being, as of July 2019, my lessons are offered free of change, and I expect they will remain free for the next few months at least. Sometimes my students make a donation to a charity on my behalf, but this is *not* necessary. Please do not let a lack of funds prevent you from asking me for help.
I am particularly interested in teaching any aspiring technical artists who are interested in scripting and programming for video games and computer graphics.
I currently teach students all over the world, although I only speak English. I tend to be available fairly odd hours.

Perfect! I was actually very surprised by my tutoring sess with Joe. You're familiar with the expression, "if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is." (No doubting Thomas allowed here, folks.) I guarantee 100% this will not be the case from a tutoring session with this individual. I googled him after I read his ad. I usually do that first before attempting a booking, just to try and get a feel if the tutor and I will be a good fit. When I first saw his mile long list of accolades, I thought this couldn't be the same guy. This has to be a catfish account here on superprof. Check it out, don't take my word for it; you'll see what I mean. But, nope. We'll be smashing through every single misconception you might have had after seeing his ad here. If you thought maybe this account isn't real? Well, Joe was probably sainted in another life. That would be the best explanation for your luck in discovering him. The man has a mind like a steel trap. Perhaps computer genius would be a better descriptive. He's knowledgeable, highly intelligent; he listens to your tech challenges and then quickly assesses exactly what areas you need to be taught first of those. Joe has the deliverables, and best yet, he can not only transfer these methodologies to you in a sound, clear way that you will retain, but the man has endless patience and huge generosity of spirit!! Thank you, Joe!!! Another 6-star rating!
Angelica was great to work with. She needed some help with fundamentals of file management and Photoshop for photography, and I provided about 4 hours of assistance. She seemed quite happy by the end of it.
Perfect! Joe did a very good job helping me out with the subjects that I had been struggling with. He offered detailed criticism on what had been done incorrectly, and detailed guides on how to improve. Definitely a very good tutor overall.
Jacob was polite easy to work with. I helped him with various concepts related to 3D modeling and texturing, mostly with software such as 3dsmax and Substance Painter. Everything went smoothly, and I'd be happy to work with him again.
Perfect! Joe is an very experienced, accessible, and generous tutor! If you are a film/video student, I definitely recommend him
Mei-Jing was great to work with. I really enjoyed helping with the project she was working on. We mostly discussed film production, including planning, structure, and editing. I am looking forward to seeing the resulting short film some day.
Perfect! I am very happy to take Joe's class. He is very patient and passionate. He is very good at computer graphics and art. As counterparts in the game industry, we have lots of things to talk about. I can learn how to use different game editors and art tools from him. It's a great experience.
Our session went well and Andy was polite and easy to work with. We mostly discussed the Unreal game engine and I helped him get familiar with its basics usage.
Perfect! Truly the definition of a super prof. Incredibly knowledgeable in a wide array of skills, also Joe is very patient, and generous with his time. I would strongly recommend Joe to anyone interested in learning how to use 3d tools to the best of their abilities.
Patrick has been an excellent student who has been a pleasure to work with. He is polite, patient, and willing to do the studying, work, and consideration, necessary for his development. I look forward to working with him further and hope that I can be useful in his pursuit of his goals.
Perfect! Very helpful! Joe tried his best to assist my workflow and even directed me to someone who specializes in anatomy!
Khor was great to work with, and though I didn't help him for very long, I believe that I was able to successfully direct him to other sources of information. I would be happy to work with him again in the future.
Perfect! Joe is an amazing teacher. Friendly, understanding, and patient, from the moment the lesson started. Highly recommended. Would definitely contact him again when looking for an online teacher.
Yogev was a polite and attentive student. He had some fairly specific questions, which I answered, so I'd consider it a sucessful session.
Perfect! Joe is an excellent tutor! For online lessons, he uses a great program (Zoom) for voice chat and screen sharing. He's very knowledgeable, takes the time to teach and to answer every question you might have. I highly recommend him!
Annik was great to work with. Her situation is somewhat unlike my other students'. I wasn't sure how useful I'd be able to be, but I think in the second session I was able to provide clearer suggestions.
Suggestions were mostly discussed in the session, so I won't bother writing any here.
Hopefully I will speak more with Annik it the future.
Perfect! very thorough, clear mic . excellent tutor
Griffyn was a great student to work with. Our sessions consisted mostly of problem solving, where I provided solutions to problems Griffyn was having. I also did quite a bit of answering assorted questions posed by Griffyn, and discussing details regarding the reasoning behind the answers.
I expect to continue working with Griffyn in the future.
