About Farook
I am an electrical engineer, educator and research scientist. I have 30+ years of work experience in teaching, research, student supervision, academic service, etc.
My research interests include signal and image processing, pattern recognition & machine learning, intelligent systems, speech/audio processing, bioacoustics, big data, computer vision and data hiding. He has published over 130 research articles in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters.
I am a fast learner, and a team player who loves working with others. I also have a creative mind that loves both teaching and research. I enjoy taking on challenges.
Teaching is my passion. Teaching allows me to help people and enlighten young minds, who are going to be the future architects of our nation and of the world.
The goal of my teaching is to help students develop their knowledge and skill. My role is to motivate students and help them reach their full potential. I believe that teaching and research are not independent endeavors, but rather synergetic processes.
My experience has shown that teaching can lead to good research topics, and conversely, research often provides new ways of explaining things in teaching. During lectures I enjoy sharing my research experience with students. In the classroom, I encourage my students to ask conceptual questions. I often spend time with my students after the class to discuss critical issues and help them to improve their understanding.
I published 150+ research papers in refereed journals, international conference proceedings, and book chapters.
I was the main/sole supervisor for 7 PhD students (completed), co-supervisor for 5 PhD students (completed), supervisor of many MSc/MEng and undergraduate students.
I was involved in a number of funded research projects sponsored by Swedish National Science and Technology Board (NUTEK), Singapore Academic Research Fund (AcRF), CANARIE, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

The goal of my teaching is to help students developing their knowledge and skill. I think my role is also to motivate and encourage the students and help them to reach their full potential. I believe that teaching and research are not independent endeavors, but rather are synergetic processes. My experience has shown that teaching can lead to good research topics, and conversely, research often provides new ways of explaining things in teaching. That is why, during lecture I use to share my research experience with the students. In the classroom I encourage them for interaction by asking conceptual questions. I often spend time with my students after the class to discuss their critical issues and help them to improve their understanding.
I have been involved for more than twelve years in teaching. I have also taken two educational development courses - Faculty Oral English Program (24 hrs) and Communication and Teaching & Learning in Higher Education (50 hrs), which are quite helpful to improve my teaching skills. I am active in new course development and innovations in the existing courses. Over the years, I have been teaching courses in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
I would like to improve the online teaching materials. It would consist of interactive and multi-media contents which can be better understood by the students. Also online quiz and conceptual questions could be developed.
