About Carl

As an experienced elementary reading tutor, I am deeply committed to helping young readers develop both the skills and the confidence they need to succeed. I understand that reading is not only foundational for academic growth but also for building self-esteem, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. My tutoring approach is rooted in evidence-based practices, including guided reading, phonics instruction, and fluency-building techniques. I take time to assess each student’s unique strengths and areas for growth, then customize lessons that are both engaging and effective. By integrating games, storytelling, and purposeful conversation, I make learning enjoyable while steadily improving comprehension and decoding skills. Students and families can trust that they are working with a dedicated professional who prioritizes both academic progress and emotional support. I maintain clear, compassionate communication with students, parents, and teachers, ensuring that each child’s learning experience is positive, goal-oriented, and aligned with classroom expectations. My background in literacy education and years of hands-on tutoring experience enable me to confidently address a range of reading challenges. More importantly, I strive to create a safe, encouraging space where students feel valued, understood, and empowered to grow as readers.

About the lesson

I believe that every child learns differently, so my first goal is to get to know each student as a reader — their interests, strengths, and challenges. I use that understanding to tailor lessons and activities that feel fun, engaging, and meaningful for them.
I focus on building confidence first. Many struggling readers feel anxious about making mistakes, so I create a safe, supportive environment where it’s okay to take risks and learn from them.
I use a balanced literacy approach which includes:
Guided reading: Working with leveled texts at their instructional level.
Phonics and word work: Building decoding and spelling skills in fun, hands-on ways.
Read-alouds and discussions: Modeling fluent reading and thinking about texts.

Independent reading: Giving students choice to build a love for books.
