About Nyssa

I'm currently an aerospace engineering major with a special interest in astrophysics, but I love anything STEM. I have experience in engineering, physics, math, environmental science, chemistry, biology, and CS (Java, Python). I did FIRST robotics in highschool and now act as an engineering and programming mentor in my free time.

Having personal experience with the International Baccalaureate program, I understand its rigorous demands and unique approach to education. This insight allows me to prepare you not just for exams, but for the critical thinking and analytical skills that are crucial for success in IB and beyond.

My teaching method is rooted in a student-centered approach, focusing on personalization and active learning. I employ various techniques to ensure effective knowledge transfer:

Adaptive Instruction
-Tailoring my teaching style to match each student's learning
preferences and pace. This might involve using visual aids for visual learners, hands-on experiments for kinesthetic learners, or in-depth discussions for auditory learners.

Problem-Based Learning
-Using real-world problems to contextualize abstract concepts, especially in subjects like physics and environmental science. This approach helps students see the practical applications of what they're learning.

Scaffolding
-Breaking down complex topics into manageable chunks, gradually building up the difficulty level as the student gains confidence and understanding.

Typical Lesson Plan

A typical 60-minute lesson in my tutoring sessions might look like this:

Review (5-10 minutes): We start by reviewing previous material and addressing any lingering questions.

Introduction of New Concept (10-20 minutes): I introduce the new topic, explaining key points and relating it to previously learned material.

Guided Practice (20-25 minutes): We work through example problems together, with me demonstrating the process and then guiding the student through similar problems.

Independent Practice (10-15 minutes): The student tackles problems independently while I observe and provide support as needed.

Additionally:

Interdisciplinary Approach
My engineering background and diverse subject expertise allow me to draw connections between different STEM fields, providing a more holistic understanding of concepts.

IB Experience
My familiarity with the IB curriculum enables me to prepare students not just for exams, but for the rigorous critical thinking and analysis required in advanced academic programs.

Technological Integration
I leverage various online tools and software in my remote sessions to enhance learning, such as virtual whiteboards, simulation software, and interactive quizzes.

Target Audience
My tutoring services are primarily designed for:
Middle and high school students (typically ages 11-18)
Students in IB programs or preparing for IB exams
Those taking advanced placement (AP) STEM courses
Students struggling with specific STEM subjects or concepts
Learners preparing for standardized tests with STEM components

I'm particularly well-suited for students who:
Need help in multiple STEM subjects

Are looking for a tutor who can explain complex concepts in relatable terms
Prefer a flexible, remote learning environment
Want personalized attention to address their specific learning challenges or goals
