About Carlleen
I have a BA in English with concentrations in Composition and Literature from a small midwestern Liberal Arts college. I also have a MA in Communication, from a small midwestern Liberal Arts university. I have more than 10 years of experience with teaching and tutoring English, writing, ESL, and academic skills. I have worked in college tutoring centers, online classrooms, international online schools, and with K-12 students in my local school district. I earned my TESOL certificate in 2019 and I enjoy working with students who are learning English as a Second Language, especially as I also get to learn about other cultures in the process. I continue to access learning opportunities to help me stay current on best practices, trends, and changes in the academic research world. I love learning and I love helping you learn!

My passion, what I truly love, is working with individual and small groups of students for English and writing lessons!
I believe that every student can be a successful writer and I believe that my responsibility is not to provide the "right" answers for students, but to encourage them to think critically and express their own ideas effectively.
As a student meeting with me for the first time, here's what you can expect:
We open the session with some conversation about your overall and specific goals of what you'd like to accomplish and how you perceive your own strengths and challenges. This early conversation helps me understand what you want and need and helps us get to know each other and build rapport together.
Though each situation is unique, a first session usually also includes some informal assessment of some important skills for where ever you are in your educational journey. For example, if you are in middle school, your Language Arts classes might be focused on strong topic sentences and paragraph structure. If you are in college, your assignments might be focused on academic research skills like finding sources and creating citations.
From that conversation, I outline a plan for several lessons based on our goals. That plan is certainly flexible and open to revision, but it gives us a general outline of how to move forward. We usually do dive right into the some lesson material in that first session, and subsequent lessons will be more content-focused.
After every session, I ask you for feedback about what you liked and didn't like about the session so that I can continually strive for excellent sessions while considering your unique needs.
Some of the topics I can help you with include academic research, citations, structure/organization, audience/purpose, thesis statements, topic sentences and strong paragraphs, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading.
I can also help you with the pre-writing phase of your projects like brainstorming, outlining, and researching. When your project nears completion, I can also work with you through the process of editing and revising.
I look forward to working with you!
