About Thomas

I'm a veteran English teacher, writing coach, and librarian with more than 40 years of experience helping students become stronger readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

I work with high school, AP, and university students on reading, writing, literature, research papers, test preparation, and college essays.

Over the past 20+ years, I have evaluated more than 22,000 student essays as an AP Reader. I have also served as a teacher, librarian, administrator, and English department leader. My students have earned admission to Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Brown, Rice, the University of Chicago, and many other highly selective universities.

I work one-on-one with a limited number of students so that feedback remains individualized, practical, and timely. Together, we develop the habits that lead to academic success: close reading, thoughtful analysis, clear organization, concise writing, and careful revision.

Whether you need help with an essay, a challenging novel, an AP course, or a long-term writing project, we'll establish clear goals, create a practical plan, and begin with the assignment that matters most right now.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

My path to teaching was unexpected. I started in Biomedical Engineering at USC, then took a break to coach tennis in Iowa. Returning to studies at the University of Iowa, I had an epiphany halfway through my credits: teaching was my true calling. This realization stemmed from my experiences as a tennis coach. I loved working with young people and the constant challenge of improving my craft. Teaching offered a unique opportunity to reinvent myself each year and make a lasting impact. It aligned with my values, combining my passion for lifelong learning, connecting with young people, and contributing meaningfully to society. Teaching isn't just what I do-it's who I am, providing a sense of fulfillment I doubt I'd find elsewhere.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

Literature is my passion because it offers a unique window into the human experience. As a lifelong reader and former librarian, I've found that literature connects us intimately with life, others, and ourselves. I'm passionate about inspiring students to read analytically and write insightfully about literature. This two-step process of critical reading and analytical writing allows students to discover an author's craft and articulate their own interpretations. My commitment to this process is unwavering; I'm available 24/7 for students because I believe writing is never truly finished. By guiding students through this process, I aim to nurture not just skilled readers and writers, but thoughtful, empathetic individuals who can engage deeply with the world.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

After over 40 years in education, including roles as a professional trainer and department chair, I let the impact of my work speak for itself. The transformative nature of my classes is reflected in students' feedback, even decades later. My approach is rooted in understanding each student's unique context, providing thorough, timely, and honest feedback. What makes me a "Superprof" is my dedication to each student, guiding them through complex skills that enable them to read and write more thoughtfully and persuasively. My approach isn't just about academic success; it's about fostering a lifelong love for learning and literature, empowering students to engage critically with the world.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Two remarkable individuals shaped my journey as an educator: Dr. Robert McCarthy and Dr. Martin Felton. Dr. McCarthy, former head of the Coalition of Essential Schools, introduced me to core principles like student empowerment and authentic assessment. Dr. Felton, our school director for 20 years, was a true humanist who taught me the value of patience and believing in individuals' potential. Both showed me that effective teaching goes beyond imparting knowledge; it's about empowering students, fostering community, and recognizing each learner's individuality. Their influence has been instrumental in shaping my teaching philosophy and practice.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success include a deep passion for literature and writing, coupled with a personalized approach to education. I'm committed to continuous improvement and 24/7 availability for students. I excel at teaching analytical reading and writing, focusing on nurturing thoughtful, empathetic individuals. Success is measured by the lasting impact on students, evident in their feedback years later. Inspired by my mentors, I've integrated principles of student empowerment and a humanistic approach into my teaching. My ultimate goal is to equip students with tools for success in university and life, balancing respect for classic literature with modern teaching methods. In essence, my approach combines love for the subject, commitment to individual growth, and belief in education's transformative power.
