Enthusiastic Biochemistry graduate - I enjoy all aspects of science and the problem solving aspects which they present. I have recently completed a PhD in Biochemistry so I am highly knowledgeable in both Biology and Chemistry and have had continuous use of maths throughout my degree.

Experience:
Tutored many students over the past 5 years in Biology, Chemistry and Maths to students ranging from age 9-18. This required me to explain concepts in an enthusiastic and creative way at the appropriate level for each student to enhance their understanding of the subject.
Graduate teaching assistant in Undergraduate practical and workshop sessions in Biology department, University of York (UK) assisting students with their work. This included long term assistance with the ‘Catch-up Chemistry’ scheme, sessions designed to support students with limited Chemistry backgrounds. This included marking and giving feedback on students work.
I also established and organised PAL scheme in Biology at University of York leading a team of 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate tutors to assist 1st year students with both adjusting to University learning styles and with Biochemistry module content.
I also have considerable experience working with children and young people including those with additional needs: as a Guide Leader with Girlguiding UK; and as a volunteer with Special Needs Activities and Play Provision for York (SNAPPY) supporting children and young people with a range of physical, learning and mental disabilities.
Approach:
All students learn differently, therefore, it is important to adapt my teaching style to the student. I speak with both the student and parents to find out how they learn best, which areas of the subject are most challenging and regularly ask for feedback to ensure my teaching style works for the student.
I follow exam specifications and ensure the student can answer exam style questions as well as understanding the content. However, I also teach around the subject if there are areas which the student is particularly interested in.
