About Lily

I am Currently studying BA Primary Education with Mathematics at the University of Reading. It is my aim to strive to assist children in their acquisition of the necessary information, regarded as essential for passage through the education system in a creative and innovative manner. The technological advancement of recent years can be utilised to further a child's lifelong learning. Thus, teaching needs to move forward in line with these developments and utilise computers to assist all children to reach their full potential.
As the second most important agent of socialisation, its role must be considered seriously, as children acquire more than just academic knowledge when in the school environment and all opportunities must be taken to facilitate this process. Personally, my experience within the primary sector was mixed and this has made me even more determined to engage all children in their learning, creating a positive learning environment, where they have the possibility to thrive.
Arguably, it is necessary to consider the pedagogy in relation to the learner within an educational context, especially as each child originates from a different social and cultural background and these assets must be respected and enhanced. To facilitate a career in teaching, I chose to take A level Mathematics which I completed in a year securing a grade B, Sociology and Double Health & Social Care. Maths was chosen, as it is a specialism for which I have always had an affinity, and an aspect, which I would like to incorporate in my own teaching. It has provided a range of skills including logical thought, organisation and manipulation of abstract to concrete concepts.
Sociology has allowed a greater depth of understanding regarding the behaviour of people within a society, which is intrinsically linked to the development of a child during secondary socialisation. Sociology has 'opened my eyes' to the many different family structures and cultural backgrounds that children may have around the world.
Working as a member of a collective team, offers the chance to listen to the opinions of others, share ideas and take the lead in situations where necessary. This diversified my skills, including the chance to be creative and realise the importance of aesthetics. This position required a trustworthy nature, adaptability and an understanding of human nature.

Personally, I believe in a very positive working environment for all children, giving children a 'I can' mindset along with a set of simple tools around the subject they are learning, the child will thrive. After carrying out an in-depth study of a primary age child, looking at the development of social, emotional, physical and intellectual characteristics. As part of my desire to become a primary school teacher I have undertaken work experience at a local school, understanding the role of the teacher and the challenging aspects of this career choice.
To diversify my experience, I have assisted the teaching of Mathematics to GCSE students, who have learning difficulties and this made me realise the importance of the language used to explain challenging concepts. It was important to have proficient communication skills, patience, adaptability and excellent time management, which display both integrity and respect.
