About Thehan

Hi, I’m Thehan. I’m an Engineering student at Queens' College, University of Cambridge, having completed my A-levels at Hills Road Sixth Form College. I particularly enjoy problems that require you to connect different ideas, think beyond a familiar method and understand why a solution works.

My academic achievements:
- A* grades in Maths (95%), Further Maths (92%), Physics, Computer Science and Extended Project Qualification
- ESAT 9.0/9.0/7.0 in Maths 1, Maths 2, Physics
- Isaac Physics top 50 recognition after solving over 700 problems, with invitation to the Churchill College and Cavendish Laboratory summer programme
- AQA top 100 nationally in A-level Computer Science
- BPhO Gold and four UKMT Senior Maths Challenge Golds
- Arkwright Engineering Scholar

Having recently taken A-levels and the ESAT, I understand the demands of both: developing strong subject knowledge, recognising useful and repeatable approaches and working under time pressure with accuracy. I want to help students build those skills while becoming more confident in their own problem solving and reasoning.

You’re welcome whether you’re aiming for the highest grades or finding parts of the course difficult. There’s no expectation that you should understand something immediately, and I’m happy to revisit an idea and explain it differently until it makes sense.

About the lesson

I want students to understand how to approach an unfamiliar problem, rather than rely on remembering a set of steps. My teaching focuses on the reasoning behind the maths: where a formula comes from, why a method works, and how different ideas can be combined to solve a difficult problem.

I'm offering 60-minute lessons for:
- ESAT Maths 1, Maths 2, Physics Preparation
- ESAT Strategy Sessions – exam technique, timing and final revision
- A-level Further Maths
- A-level Maths
- GCSE Higher Maths

ESAT preparation focuses on five areas: secure content knowledge, fluent mental maths, flexible problem-solving, speed and accuracy. Through timed practice and careful review, we’ll identify where you lose time or marks and work on the specific knowledge gaps, inefficient methods or recurring mistakes behind them.

What to expect from my lessons:
• A clear starting point. We’ll discuss your goals and any topics you find difficult. I'll provide a short initial assessment to identify strengths and gaps, so we spend our time on what will help you most.
• Theory explained properly. I teach the relevant concepts directly, using worked examples and deriving formulae where this helps your understanding. We’ll use your course textbook to support practice and keep lessons aligned with what you’re studying.
• Plenty of problem-solving. We’ll build from textbook exercises to exam questions that require you to choose and apply methods yourself. You’ll have time to attempt problems and explain your thinking, with questions and hints from me when you need support.
• Homework with feedback. I’ll set a short, focused task suited to your workload. Work submitted at least 24 hours before our next lesson will be marked in advance, so we can discuss mistakes and revisit anything that needs more practice.

Thehan is a good friend of mine who helped me with A-level mechanics throughout Year 13, particularly with topics like kinematics, projectile motion and some of the harder modelling questions.

Just before my Further Maths A-level exam, we hopped on Google Meet to go through SHM modelling and second-order differential equations using an online whiteboard. One question we worked through was a 10-mark past-paper problem involving two springs and oil providing resistance. He annotated the question and drew diagrams showing the extensions of the springs and the equilibrium position, then explained how to use the forces to set up the differential equation.

Breaking it down like that helped me understand where the equation actually came from rather than just following the mark scheme. I found his explanations clear and useful, especially when I was stuck on how to turn a mechanics problem into the maths needed to solve it.

By the end of the year I achieved an A* in Maths and an A in Further Maths, improving by a grade in both subjects and meeting my UCL offer. I’m really grateful for the help he gave me throughout Year 13, and I’d definitely recommend him to anyone who needs help making sense of harder A-level Maths or Further Maths questions.
