Matthew is a respected tutor in our community. They are highly recommended for their commitment and the quality of their lessons. An excellent choice to progress with confidence.
About Matthew
I am a penultimate-year Philosophy student at the University of Edinburgh. My academic focus is in Logic, Ethics, and Political Economics, but my experience extends far beyond the lecture theatre.
I believe that the best tutors are those who can demonstrate the real-world value of their subject. In addition to my studies, I am an active Policy Researcher. I recently co-authored a national policy framework for a leading Scottish think tank, where I was responsible for the moral and ethical grounding of the paper. This professional experience has honed my ability to synthesise complex data and produce high-quality, persuasive writing under strict deadlines.
My background is defined by a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence. I have a history of managing intense professional schedules, which has instilled in me a level of discipline and reliability that I bring to every tutoring session.
I chose to tutor because I am passionate about the "radical" potential of philosophy—not just as an abstract subject, but as a tool for clear thinking and effective communication. Whether I am helping a student write the best essay they are capable of writing, navigate the complexities of a Higher RMPS essay or preparing a candidate for the LNAT, my goal is to inspire the same confidence and intellectual curiosity that has driven my own academic and professional journey.

My tutoring approach is built on the belief that critical thinking is a muscle that can be trained. Having co-authored national policy research for the Common Weal think tank and currently completing my Philosophy degree at the University of Edinburgh, I teach students how to bridge the gap between having an idea and writing a brilliant argument.
My Methodology: I use a logic-first"framework. Instead of just reviewing content, I teach students the structural mechanics of a top-tier essay.
The Blueprint: We start by breaking down complex prompts into a logical flow of premises and conclusions.
The Researcher’s Toolkit: I share the exact research and synthesis techniques I use to draft policy papers, helping students manage large amounts of information.
Typical Lesson Structure: Lessons are typically 60 minutes long, though 90-minute sessions are available for intensive exam or essay preparation (Highers/A-Levels).
. Review (10m): Addressing hurdles from the previous week or school feedback.
. Synthesis (30m): Introducing a new concept or tackling a specific essay section.
. Application (20m): Live drafting or "argument testing" where we challenge the logic of the student’s work.
Qualifications & Experience:
UoE Philosophy Student: Penultimate year with a strong 2:1 track record, specialising in Logic and Political Philosophy.
Published Researcher: Lead author on forthcoming policy research (CORE, 2026) focusing on moral frameworks.
Experience: History of managing high-pressure environments (100+ hour weeks) and professional writing for think tanks.
Who I Teach: My lessons are designed for beginners as well life long learners.
I am particularly effective for:
High school graduates preparing for university level study in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Mature students
SQA Highers & Advanced Highers (Philosophy, English, Modern Studies, RMPS).
GCSE & A-Level students looking to improve their grades in the Humanities.
LNAT Candidates: Students needing to sharpen their logical reasoning for law school applications.

Matthew has never met a stranger. I got to know him through Superprof as my philosophy tutor, and from the very first session he created a comfortable and engaging space. Despite my being mentally fried and anguished from dense readings & looming deadlines, his tutoring style carried me through the murky depths of first sem without the passive aggressiveness of most tutors. When motivation dips, Matthew somehow helps you push through by a sheer tyranny of will, keeping sessions focused but encouraging, and most importantly— keeping you accountable!
Thanks Matty!!Met Matthew as a flatmate, and within the first five minutes we were out for a meal together; Matthew is very approachable and has consistently proven to be a reliable friend. Given his understanding character and overall optimistic attitude towards life, I quickly find myself confiding in him when I struggle. His immense curiosity earned him a great expanse of knowledge, anything from philosophy and religion, to social media ethics. And his impeccable dedication to his work makes him exemplary in his understanding of approaching university curriculum.
Matthew is patient, kind, and really knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. 9/10
Matthew was a great fit for my teenager and made essay writing feel much more manageable.
He explained things clearly, gave practical feedback, and helped build confidence rather than just fixing the work for them. We saw real improvement in structure and clarity, and my teen actually felt more comfortable approaching writing assignments.
I’d happily recommend Matthew to other parents.View more recommendations
