About Eric

I have taught French (and Spanish) in a variety of public and private schools from Maryland to Texas to Georgia to Mexico. I have taught for two years at the Alliance Française of Ciudad Obregón (Sonora, México) and also at the Alliance Française de Dallas (Texas). If you didn't know, you need usually to be a native Francophone speaker and educator in order to be hired by the various Alliances Françaises. When I learned that I had attained a level of fluency beyond my peers was firstly when studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, where my cohort of Americans consisted of those with Francophone family who regularly visited their family abroad and of those who did not. I fit in with those who had francophone family and when outside of class I was only hanging out with actual French persons, not the Anglophones of my cohort or wherever I went. I was actually asked if I was from Switzerland. (Remember, this was my first travel abroad and I hadn't been outside of Texas except for the three years of university study at that point). I was in my tenth year of studying French. I still didn't consider myself fluent, but I knew then that I was more fluent than my Anglophone colleagues. The next time that I learned that I was more fluent than I thought was when studying for my MA in French and a member of my cohort from Ville de Québec, Québec, remarked that my Québécois accent was stronger than his. It wasn't until I had passed the DALF-C2 exam after teaching at the Alliance Française de Ciudad Obregón that I was beginning to be comfortable saying to others that I was fluent in French. When I joined a French Meetup Group in the Dallas area and the native speakers classified me among their part of the group was when I was finally comfortable saying that I was fluent in French. That being said, I « do » French every day. My phone, my computer and everything else is set to French and I can detect when an app or a webpage is using a translation software. Quant à mon professionnalisme, I have had between 15 - 20 years teaching experience in public and private school settings, teaching students from three years of age to adults who are returning to university studies during or post-career. I will tend towards a method more décontractée in order to help you feel more relaxed but I will still work professionally with you. If you prefer letutoyage or le vouvoyage I can work with you either way. And as hinted at, I have become fluent in Spanish and speak a couple of other languages not quite so fluently, so depending on the languages which you speak or have studied, I can work with those skills to help you acquire the same in French.

I use communication-based techniques to help you progress in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, tying in the web of knowledge which you have from other knowledge (languages, history, math, geography, sciences, etc.) A typical first lesson for a beginner will include greetings and introductions, review of numbers and alphabet, morphemes (letter combinations which represent particular sounds). Support activities which I would encourage you to do outside of your regular classes and my tutorials would be to memorize short texts (of 1-2 sentences), write in your French journal daily, come to class with a question (that way no matter the theme of the class you can learn something that interests you, or if you need clarification on a vocabulary, grammar or cultural point), and do French outside of class settings at least 30 minutes per day. These support activities are what I did to attain fluency (speaking, reading, writing, listening) in less than ten years... and learning a language at an academically proficient level takes time, more than the two years needed just to attain basic interpersonal communication skills. For a more advanced student, your needs will dictate the ordering and déroulement of the class and the lesson. If you need more work on pronunciation, specific grammar skills, etc., we will work with those and develop our plan from there. What sets me apart? I am an American, a Texan, who began like most learning French in middle school but I took my French outside of class, I got my BA in French and a Master in French and a BS in secondary education to teach French, in that order. Until I worked for the Alliance Française in Mexico, I had only been in Paris for my semester abroad while studying at Goucher College as far as working/living abroad and immersion in a Francophone world is concerned. I picked up a Québécois accent because we had a satellite dish that could only get Radio-Canada for video broadcasts. This was in the days before the Internet. That was the accent which stuck despite my never having lived in Québec. I have passed the DELF-B2 and the DALF-C2 diploma exams and I can help you to prepare for those exams, as well as the A1, A2, B1 and C1 exams, in addition to the AP French exam or CLEP exams in French. My target audience are those who are interested in furthering their skills, whether they be beginner, degree-seeking or advanced students of French and Francophone cultures and language. Preferably, y'all are self-motivated adolescents or adults but I can work with self-motivated younger students as well.
