About Michael

I am a qualified architect with considerable experience in the conversion of historic buildings and new-build within Conservation Areas. Work experience has been gained in a number of RIBA Regional Award winning practices in the North West of England. Through my work I have developed a particular specialism in the conservation and regeneration of historic buildings.

Whilst continuing in practice I qualified as a Cabinetmaker, gaining skills in both hand and machine woodworking, enabling a deeper appreciation of the craft and constructional detailing aspects of design, informing both architectural practice and, more recently, my teaching concerns.

I have experience as 1st, 2nd & 3rd Year Tutor of an Interior Architecture & Design Undergraduate BA (Hons) course. As well as having an interest in constructional and technical aspects of interiors, other teaching interests cover a field broadly urban in emphasis, including interventions in historic and peripheral areas, focusing on working with old buildings, with projects grounded in the particulars of site, and programs arising out of close consideration of anticipated operation and inhabitation.

Having had much working experience of refurbishment and conservation work as a practicing architect, I have further developed my particular interest in the conservation of buildings through academic research, which has been a continuous and ongoing aspect of my professional activity and interest.

My aim as a mentor is to make you feel confident in your ideas and interrogate you brief requirements to help you help yourself. I have a great passion for teaching and learning.
I am able to advise students through their design projects, from urban to building to interior to detail. I strongly believe that the brief starts with analysis of the problems and identifying the potentials of the project and how the scheme would operate for the user.
Having delivered history & theory lectures, I have knowledge and techniques to also assist with dissertation subject matter and development
I also have experience in guiding Work Placement students and aspects of self-promotion, so am able to offer careers-related advice.

In summary, I can offer assistance and guidance on the following:
• Preparing for interviews or university admissions applications
• Developing design projects for architecture & interior students: from site analysis to concept development to design development to construction and presentation
• Technology submissions: Building Services, Structure, Construction, Detailing
• Dissertation development: From finding a suitable topic to chapter development to editing
• Professional Studies: Developing CVs, job applications, Covering Letters

About the lesson

My online tutorials are aimed at solving your problems, by identifying exactly what the key issues are and how I can help you.

I aim to provide design related assistance through identifying precedents and other sources of further reding/research. I am able to provide feedback on existing work, and how this can be improved, moving forward.

During our sessions, I aim to set targets for progression to enable development to be as structured and directed as possible. I have much experience in the difficulties students experience, so am able to work through such issues to ensure less stress on your behalf, and ensure workloads are manageable.
