About James
Hi there, I'm James and I have taught maths for over 12 years in state schools, private schools, and as a tutor, all the way from primary up to A level. I left the full-time classroom in 2022 in search of a better work-life balance but my love for teaching has not diminished, so now I return to tutoring. As a person I am patient, positive, and easy to talk to. I encourage positivity and conversation using sound mathematical language with all my students - if I had a penny for every time I've heard "I get it but I can't explain it"... My explanations are clear and simple - using plenty of plain language too - and as a result my students learn to think clearly and mathematically. There is no one-size-fits-all method for teaching, and so I draw on many teaching styles: sometimes constructivist (take something you know and develop it), sometimes discovery-based (try things out and look for patterns); at times Socratic (asking lots of questions), and at others didactic (telling you exactly what you need to know); sometimes using pencil and paper, sometimes digital; and always, always, always, a mixture of showing clear, orderly working and drawing diagrams. I find this versatile and varied approach allows each of my students to latch on to what works best for them. I mentioned that I always draw diagrams, and that's really important because diagrams are an extremely efficient way to link together multiple concepts. This matters because a common stumbling block for students who engage me as a tutor is the sheer quantity of maths that have to remember. By understanding the connections between topics I show my students that a lot of what they're asked to learn is actually just the same thing said another way; when you see things as connected they're easier to learn. Plus, as a bonus, you'll have a much deeper understanding of it too. And in my experience students who have a deep, connected understanding of maths find it much more enjoyable. I have tutored students who needed help with a specific topic, and others who wanted ongoing support to build their confidence. I enjoy getting to know them and sharing my love of maths with them all the same. So whether you need me for a few lessons or a few years, I look forward to working with you and getting you awesome at maths. Speak to you soon! Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
James is one of the most patient and level heading people I know, giving him the perfect qualities of a teacher/tutor. His communication, listening and empathy skills mean that he always made learning a collaborative effort.
I have known and worked with James for over 5 years. Professionally, James holds himself to a high standard, a standard he holds his students to also. He had an excellent track record of strong results with students ranging from those with SEND, to top set classes. I have always admired James for his ability to form trusting and respectful relationships with his classes - he was sorely missed by students and teachers alike when he took a position at a new school. The thing that sets James apart from other teachers is his passion for his subject and his love of the creativity that he finds within it.
