About Tom
(concealed information)
In the words of the ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates:
"The only true wisdom is in knowing that you know nothing".
I like this quote because it serves as a reminder to stay humble in regard to how much we think we know. I started off knowing very little and now I know "some" things - enough to work as a university researcher and teach others who don't know quite as many things as I do (yet). However, I am very aware that there are almost infinitely more things that I could learn. More things than I can possibly study in a lifetime. In the vastness of human knowledge, I am still very much a beginner.
If you feel daunted by a subject or that there is just too much to learn, don't worry! That is normal and I know how it feels too. So how do we deal with it...? We simply start!
We start by making sure the fundamentals are understood. We focus on the "why?" as well as the "how?". Once we have the fundamentals down, we can start building upon them and getting more creative. We'll discuss how we're going to solve a problem and then you'll do it. The aim is that eventually you won't need my help - you will learn how to teach yourself!
I am a very patient person and enjoy coming up with ways to present and explain ideas until you "get it". I look forward to working with you.

In a world where you can ask an AI model to complete your work and assignments for you, I am offering a deeper understanding that will enable you to assess whether it's leading you down the wrong path.
Even if the computer code you are given generates the correct answer, it does not mean it's correct, efficient or the best way of getting there.
What AI lacks is the innate creativity and critical thinking of humans - qualities that I aim to foster in my teaching.
With a PhD in Computational Physics and experience working as an academic researcher writing cutting-edge simulation code, I am used to explaining challenging concepts at a range of levels.
Whether it's a young family member asking what I work on, or giving a presentation at a conference, it is my job to convey the information within a frame of reference that the audience can understand. This could be a sports analogy or high-level mathematics - whatever gets us there!
I am happy teaching all ages from absolute beginners to degree-level (depending on specialisation) and look forward to hearing what you would like to work on.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Tom took the time to understand what I already knew and which areas I wanted to improve upon. Instead of a bunch of theory, we would design and build things so I could see how all the code fits together. He's very knowledgeable and incredibly patient. I would definitely recommend him as a tutor.
100% recommend.Tom is an incredibly patient and calm teacher while still bringing enthusiasm and humour to the lessons. He comes up with real-world examples to help break down complex ideas, and provides guidance without strictly lecturing. Tom is an excellent tutor with a wealth of programming and applied knowledge, and is dependable and organized.
