About Declan

I am an HCPC-registered paramedic with frontline clinical experience across multiple practice settings, alongside postgraduate-level academic qualifications and experience in medico-legal work. My background combines practical paramedic practice with a detailed understanding of healthcare law, ethics, and evidence-based decision-making, which allows me to support students in linking theory to real clinical scenarios.

Alongside my clinical work, I have developed experience in academic writing, research methods, and critical appraisal, particularly within healthcare and legal contexts. This enables me to help students improve not only their understanding of subject content but also their ability to structure assignments, develop arguments, and meet academic standards required at degree level.

My qualifications include the Bachelor of Laws with Honours (LL.B Hons) awarded by the University of Ulster in 2011. I was subsequently awarded the Diploma of Legal Medicine (DLM) in 2014 and the Diploma in Forensic Human Identification (DipFHID) in 2016 by the Faculty of Forensic & Legal Medicine (Royal College of Physicians). My undergraduate paramedic studies were completed in 2016 at Oxford Brookes University. In 2019, I completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Bar Professional Studies (PGDip) at The University of Law, and I was called to the Bar of England and Wales by Gray’s Inn in 2023. In 2024, I was awarded a University Certificate in Postgraduate Professional Development in General Forensic Medicine by Teesside University.

I understand the pressures faced by paramedic science and healthcare students, particularly balancing academic study with placement demands. My approach is patient, structured and focused on building confidence over time, ensuring students feel supported while they are developing skills.

I maintain high professional standards in all teaching interactions, with a focus on clear communication, reliability, and tailoring support to individual learning needs.

About the lesson

I take a structured and supportive approach to tutoring, focusing on helping students understand not only what to write or learn, but why it applies in real-world paramedic practice and healthcare decision-making. My teaching style is interactive and practical, using case-based learning, guided discussion, and step-by-step breakdowns of topics such as clinical reasoning, research methods, and evidence-based practice. My aim is to build confidence in academic writing, critical thinking, and professional judgement rather than rote learning.

Lessons typically last 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged for dissertation support, exam preparation, or more in-depth academic guidance.

I have clinical experience across emergency, urgent care, maritime, and forensic settings, alongside postgraduate-level academic study and medico-legal experience. I also have a background in healthcare law, which supports teaching in areas such as ethics, legal frameworks, and reflective practice. This allows me to bridge the gap between academic requirements and clinical practice.

My lessons are aimed primarily at undergraduate paramedic science students, student paramedics on clinical placements, and other healthcare students (including nursing and allied health professions) who require support with their studies and exam preparation. I can also support newly qualified clinicians with academic or professional development needs, including interview preparation and portfolio development.
