About Addison
Programming is part of a fourteen year tutoring career during which I have taught 700 students, from complete beginners to more advanced learners preparing for coursework assessments. My academic background in chemistry, combined with laboratory experience, gave me a strong foundation in rigorous logical reasoning that transfers directly into how I teach programming. I am known for being thorough and demanding about code quality, balanced with genuine investment in each student's long term development. My programming teaching relies on detailed diagnostic assessment at the start of every tutoring relationship, identifying precisely where a student's logical reasoning needs the most focused attention. Concepts are taught through small guided projects rather than isolated syntax drills, since students remember a structure far better when it controls something they built themselves. I use pair coding for beginners, writing alongside the student and narrating my thought process including false starts and debugging steps. For more advanced students I assign real coursework style projects, focusing on code readability and structure as much as functionality. I maintain a long term tracking spreadsheet for every student, logging progress across projects over months to catch recurring weaknesses early.
