I’m a science teacher with 13 years’ experience teaching a range of science courses for 11 to 19-year-old students. I’ve always been fascinated by science especially the way it can change the way you look at the world around you. This is essential to navigate in the hi-tech world we live in.
I believe that as a science teacher, I have a key role in promoting and discovering how students engage and excel in science. The connection between science and students can be strengthened by highlighting how science is used in their daily lives and nurturing their ability to think independently and critically.
My teaching experience includes auditing students’ subject knowledge, planning appropriately to bridge gaps in their knowledge and applying various assessments to inform further planning.
Each session will be taught with a direct instruction approach to teaching & learning. This can be broken down into the following:
1. Establishing learning objectives for sessions and then making sure that students have understood the learning goals.
2. Organising and sequencing a series of sessions that move students towards a stronger understanding of specific learning goals.
3. Reviewing instructions for an activity or modelling a process—such as answering exam questions—so that students know what they are expected to do.
4. Providing students with clear explanations, descriptions, and illustrations of the knowledge and skills being taught.
5. Asking questions to make sure that students have understood what has been taught.
If it becomes apparent that you're not working at the expected level other strategies, such as scaffolding and differentiation, will be applied.
