About Christopher

I am an older man who has worked overseas teaching English and some other subjects at times in China, Malaysia and other places. I am somebody who can be counted on to be sensitive to cultural differences, and I have years of experience teaching English. I am a fully qualified teacher, and I have also worked as a tutor before. My knowledge of English and other languages as well imparts a certain depth to my teaching that not all tutors would have. My classes enjoy a certain level of humour and readiness to accept things that can come up spontaneously; however, your sessions can be as formal or as informal as you like.

About the lesson

I am good at listening to a student's academic difficulties and endeavour to tailor my tutoring to his/her needs.

For ESL, I favour (and am trained in) using a communicative approach to language learning, meaning that there will be a great deal of talking to do — especially by the student. The only way to learn anything is by using it.

For English literature, it is always preferable to be able to relate a work to each student's own experiences. I can be quite clever at doing this even if the work in question relates a story utterly unlike a student's life.

What sets me apart as a tutor is first, my experience, both in teaching and other realms, and second, my very broad knowledge of language, not only English but a number of others.

A typical lesson plan will to some extent be geared towards each student's needs, but will definitely include at least a brief review of what was covered in the last lesson and correction of homework (yes, I give homework). Then, depending on the exact content of the subject in question, there will be activities that engage the student in the subject. If there is more than one student being tutored at one time, this could include the creation of dialogues or presentations based on the course material, or even musical exercises (that would be mostly for ESL, as listening to other voices than the tutor's is important). Lessons would usually include the use of audiovisual material as well, which could be used in either ESL or English. There would definitely always be time for the student's questions.

My level is Intermediate-Senior (grades 7 to 12) by training, and I have also had much experience with adults (various ages).
