About Brianna

I have been a Spanish teacher for the past 11 years at college preparatory schools. I discovered my passion for teaching and the Spanish language and culture when I was in high school myself and took a service trip to Nicaragua. This also inspired me to lead service trips to Spanish-speaking countries with my students! Since high school, I have traveled extensively throughout Latin America both for research, with students, and for fun. I love being able to use the language to meet and learn from new people. I love sharing my passion and enthusiasm about Latin American history and Culture with others whenever possible!

My degree is a Bachelor of Arts in both Spanish and Education Studies with a concentration in Latin American History. While I was formally trained in a teacher education program in college, I've become an expert in my field over the past decade by practicing my trade, attending conferences, workshops, mentoring fellow teachers, and learning what works and what doesn't from my students every day!

I have taught all levels of Spanish from year one through Advanced Placement, and I was the lead teacher in the Spanish Department. I lived in Guadalajara, Mexico where I studied and worked In my early 20s. Here I was able to immerse myself in Mexican culture first-hand and developed a near-native grasp on the language. I tutored students while in college and have taken on some tutoring clients while teaching over the past decade.

I also have researched and studied extensively the history and literature of many countries in Latin America (though my expertise is in modern Latin America, mostly 20th century). I would consider myself a history buff of this time period and love talking about history with students and friends. If you are more interested in learning about history and culture I can incorporate that into our tutoring lessons!

Whether you are a high school student who needs AP test prep for the Spanish Language & Culture exam, a student who needs a fluent speaker with whom to practice speaking, in need of every day enrichment in grammar and/or verb drills to improve your Spanish studies in middle, high school or college, or even an adult wishing to learn some conversational Spanish to travel, I am able to help you meet your goals!

About the lesson

I tailor my lessons and teaching methods to each student's needs by sitting down to discuss goals and learning strategies with every student prior to beginning instruction. I am able to meet in person with students, or for those with busier schedules and limited time I also am well-versed in distance learning by engaging in lessons online via Skype or FaceTime. Once we have established our goals and I have assessed where a student is with the language and how they learn best, I then create lessons around their interests, current coursework, and/or establish curriculum. Students can expect to learn through a variety of supplemental activities not limited to detailed handouts describing grammar concepts, practice listening and speaking via film, culture and/or history topics, vocabulary enrichment via curated lists or, working with the student's current course work, extra games and drills to provide practice in areas of vocabulary and grammar mastery.

Details

I require 24 hours notice to cancel a lesson. If lesson is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, the full rate is charged. If lesson is rescheduled with less than 24 hours notice than 50% the rate is charged. For lessons cancelled or rescheduled with more than 24 hours notice there is no charge.

For lessons where I must travel more than 25 kilometers, charge and additional fee for extra travel not to exceed $20 (distance dependent).
