About Andrea

I have a BA in Literatures of the World with a focus in Spanish. I studied abroad for a year in Spain and also have my Master's Degree in Spanish. Since then, I have worked giving presentations in Spanish to parents about reading to children and interpreted for Spanish speakers at a legal nonprofit. I currently communicate with the Spanish-speaking community at my nonprofit.

I have tutored Spanish at multiple levels for more than 12 years at a variety of companies and privately. I also taught Spanish for two years at a university.

I believe a strong tutor-student relationship is essential to successful tutoring. It is important that students feel comfortable asking questions. I endeavor to earn the respect of my students so that I can push them to do their best work.

Working together with families, I help my students to succeed. I look forward to answering any questions you may have.

"Spanish 2 was stressful for our son so we offered to hire a tutor for him the following year for Spanish 3. He met with Andrea for 20 hours in 16 weeks over the duration of the class (18 weeks). Her knowledge of the subject is superior. She provided practice tests, study tools and helpful tips for our son to be successful. With her help he earned a B the first term and an A the second term.

Andrea arrived on schedule and was able to accommodate requests for additional and/or extended sessions to prepare for tests including the midterm and final exams.

Our son is now considering continuing on with Spanish 4 during his senior year on the condition that Andrea will be his tutor again."

About the lesson

I can teach Spanish to young beginners all the way through upper-level college.

I start by finding out the goals of my student and, if applicable, the goals of their parent. I evaluate students to find out their strengths and weaknesses as well as their preferred learning style. This is how I can adapt my lessons to their particular needs. I either work as homework help or I create my own curriculum. It depends on the preference of my student. In either case, I will create activities specifically designed to strengthen my students' weak grammar or vocabulary areas.

A typical lesson will include some vocabulary and some grammar. Sometimes, we have to prioritize certain key grammar or vocab areas to meet test or writing goals. I try to tailor grammar exercises to focus on one concept at a time unless we are practicing fluency specifically. I work to keep writing activities engaging and relevant to my particular student. I also try to gamify practice of the drier aspects of language learning, such as memorizing vocabulary, to keep students' attention.
