About Carmel

Graduate of Stuyvesant High School and Shor Yoshuv Rabbinical College.
Long-term resident of northern Israel, where I taught and tutored men and women, beginners and intermediate.

I have taught classes for many years in modern and ancient Hebrew, and all Torah-topics, with special attention to hashkafa.
I served 10 years as an assistant Dean and admin in a rabbinical college in Israel.
Also: 26 years tutoring, including people with special needs.
6 years teaching in women’s seminaries.
Languages: Fluent in English and Hebrew, both Ashkenaz and Sefardi, including grammar, pronunciation, etc.
Intermediate in Yiddish.

I learn advanced Talmud with Carmel remotely, and he is a great chavrusa (learning partner) / teacher. He is fluent , knowledgeable, and analytical. He also is careful with grammar, which is rare for a chavrusa. I highly recommend him.

I started reading Torah with Rabbi Carmel as a beginner student of biblical Hebrew, and he has been such a helpful guide in my learning over the past several months.
He is clearly very knowledgeable across many languages and traditions, and explains biblical and rabbinical concepts extremely thoroughly. I leave every lesson feeling intellectually supported and satisfied, and I believe our studies have contributed a great deal to my learning. The ability to give understanding and insight that Rabbi Carmel is able do are skills that are very rare to find in a tutor and I highly doubt any other tutor on SuperProf would have these abilities.

I also worked with Rabbi Carmel to fine tune my Hasidic Ashkenazi Hebrew (which is very unclear if you try to learn pronunciation from online sources). Rabbi Carmel also has in depth knowledge of how different intonations and emphasis on syllables change while reading Hebrew changes amongst different groups.

I highly recommend utilizing the help of Rabbi Carmel for anything Jewish, Judaism, or Israel related.

1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
Both. Born Jewish, I was exposed to spoken Hebrew (together with English) from infancy. In Hebrew School my knowledge was expanded. Religious motivation was added by learning and teaching in Yeshiva.
2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Historical- Abraham the Hebrew (Genesis 14: 13) brought the language and his religious culture (way of life) from his birthplace to Canaan (Israel).
3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
אין שום ייאוש בעולם. Never give up hope.
4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?
It's the language of my ancestors and the Torah and prayers, plus a large percentage of the Talmud.
5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Hebrew has a non-European alphabet plus 4 consonant-sounds that aren't in English. What helps the process of learning is motivation plus a tutor who is fluent in both Hebrew and English.
6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language-learning or your days in school.
My earliest knowledge (besides English) was Biblical Hebrew, not modern. When I first went to Israel, I spoke in ancient Hebrew. Israelis understood me, but stared at me.
7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
I lived in Israel for many years. Plus I learned the various Torah-texts and commentaries in the original, not in English.
8) What makes you a Superprof in language?
My love of Hebrew, both modern & ancient, and the Torah.
