About Jeremy

I have been a professional actor, director and theatre educator in the Boston area for the past 20 years. Working in all three areas allows me to come at training both as a performer and as a teacher. I have worked in professional theatre with experienced adult actors as well as educational theater with students from elementary to high school and I am currently the drama teacher at a top New England private school.

Watching students find their strength and confidence as a performer is a thrilling experience. Even if a student does not go on to a life as a professional actor, the skills they learn can be invaluable throughout their lives.

I began as a professional actor and director and took on a few educational theater jobs on the side and found I really enjoyed the teaching aspect that came along with working with student actors.

When a drama teaching position at a top New England private school came along, I jumped at the opportunity and for the past seven years I have been working as a theater educator full time.

I have been a professional director, actor and teaching artist in the Boston area for the past twenty years. I have directed at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston, Gloucester Stage Company, Foothills Theater Company, Argos Productions, Emerson College and Suffolk University. My 2009 New England premiere of Speech & Debate at the Lyric won the Elliot Norton Award for Best Production.

As an actor, I have worked at SpeakEasy Stage, Zeitgiest Stage, Mill 6 and Praxis Stage and I played the role of Tony Whitcomb in Shear Madness, Boston's longest running whodunit, under Equity contract.

I have taught and directed at several schools including The Walnut Hill School for the Arts, Beaver Country Day School, The Cambridge School of Weston, Gann Academy and The Winsor School where I have been the drama teacher for grades 5-12 for the past seven years.

I am a proud graduate of Emerson College, recently completed my Masters in Directing at Roosevelt University in Chicago and have studied Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in London, UK.

About the lesson

It depends on what skills the student is interested in. It is helpful to get to know them and what their goals are with training. Most common are:

-Monologue Selection & Audition Preparation
-Scene Study & Script Analysis
-The "Business" of Acting
-Posture, Breath & Voice work
-Getting more comfortable & confident onstage
-Getting rid of bad habits

I work with you to figure out what your goals are and we set up an individualized plan just for you! I offer one time sessions or ongoing classes.

I have worked with adult professional and amateur actors as well as elementary through high school aged students with a variety of training, from total beginner to very experienced.

Find a teacher you can be open and vulnerable with in a way that feels safe and supportive. This work is challenging and requires you to bring a lot of yourself and your experiences into the room with you. Having a sense of what you would like to accomplish in the long run will help us figure out how to set up your session.

One of my goals is to teach actors to be advocates for themselves in the rehearsal room. They should walk in with ideas, questions and suggestions, rather than think of themselves as passive participants in the process. One afternoon, I was starting to stage a scene, when one of my student actors spoke up and said, "Actually, I've been thinking about this scene and how I'd like to approach it..." she proceeded to show me her own blocking for the scene which we ended up using. It was a fantasic moment for me of watching my students implement work from the classroom in the rehearsal room!

Details

Individual sessions are $40 an hour. Please note that there is a 24 hour cancellation policy for sessions.
The majority of classes are currently held online, however I can also travel or host sessions in house.
