I began my theatrical journey at Pomona College as a relative newcomer to performance. My background was as a writer and a nascent storyteller, and I had enrolled in a few classes in the Theater department to gain a better understanding about the art of theater and the craft of playwriting. While my professors at Pomona were outstanding, I don't know that I would have had the passion for theater or if I would have ever crossed over into performance had I not met Paul, who was an assistant in the department at the time.
That's the type of impact Paul has on those that have the fortune of spending some time under his tutelage. Not only does Paul have a breadth of knowledge and insight into the academic aspects of theater and its many disciplines, but his charismatic personality embodies the very essence of theater. One moment, we might be discussing how the 'mie' pose from Kabuki fits into Western style theater, and the next Paul will be demonstrating 'mie' to hilariously punctuate his thoughts.
Ultimately, the essence of theater is not just the form, the history, the performance, or even the technical craft, it's the human element that binds all these together. Paul is one of those rare people who has the ability to not only explain this, but to show how the pieces all fit together.

There are teachers and mentors whose impact is so profound that one’s course cannot help but be influenced by them. Paul Klees was among the educators in my life who affirmed, molded, honed and taught me to nourish my passion for theater - shepherding my journey into the performing arts. To this day, I carry with me the positive experiences I had as an emerging artist under Paul's direction. His complexity, humor and depth are infectious and inform one’s craft in wonderful ways.

Paul Klees had a major influence on me as an artist and as a person. He’s a director and acting teacher with an uncanny ability to cut through artifice, kitsch, and intellectual laziness in an effort to get to the very bone of character, theme, and nuance even in the most difficult material. The joy and intellect he brought to and encouraged in the work I did with him has stuck with me throughout my career as an actor and as a director. Without a doubt, Paul’s artistry and generosity gave me the tools and the personal confidence to dig deep and to stay true to the work.
