About Michael

I'm a working television and stage actor, best known for my five seasons on HBO's The Wire, and my current roles on Luke Cage, The Deuce, and the HBO film, Wizard of Lies, starring Robert De Niro. I've appeared on Law & Order: SVU, The Good Wife, Damages, Elementary, Louie, Bosch, Blue Bloods, and more. I've also toured with The Producers and Les Miserables.

For more than a decade, I've been presenting my very popular workshop, Audition Psych 101—which deals with the mental side of the audition process—all over the country (see (concealed information) I've also been teaching and coaching professional-level actors.

My approach emphasizes encouragement, celebrates individuality, and works for truthfulness. I truly enjoy helping actors discover their best performances.

Note: I only work with professional-level actors. I love that collaboration in which we "look under the hood" of the text.

A teacher friend of mine forced me! I didn't realize I had anything to teach until she pushed me to do it. That was 15 years ago, and I haven't stopped.

I've been a working professional actor for more than 20 years, and a teacher and coach for nearly 15.

About the lesson

Since I normally coach for upcoming auditions, the process is more or less the same. I get to know new clients by working with them.

I coach only adults who are working or aspiring professionals who are actively pursuing careers.

Be careful. Get recommendations. There are a lot of "rackets" out there, preying on people's dreams. Anyone who promises fame or fortune is operating a con. And no one should spend a fortune on acting classes.

One of my favorite things that happens a lot with my clients is this: they'll come to me nervous, and after we're worked on the material, they'll leave saying "I can't wait to perform this!"
