About Erik

The UNC at Chapel Hill Aikido Club is affiliated with the Tomiki Aikido of the Americas. We use the Kenji Tomiki learning method as our basis for instruction. We use the ranking system that is used by the Tomiki Aikido of the Americas.

Aikido is a unique martial art that integrates body, mind and spirit. Graceful and powerful, it emphasizes peace and harmony over aggressions and violence.

Our school teaches ukemi, trains in hand-to-hand combat, multiple attack, defense against the knife and other weapons. Aikido is using your opponents energy and aggression against themselves by way of wrist locks, elbow locks, throws and pins.

New Students may join at anytime during the year.

To join, you do not need to be a UNC Student but non-UNC students cannot out number UNC students.

After 9 years of training in Aikido, I moved to Raleigh and decided to open a school since there were no other Tomiki Aikido dojos in the area.

Sensei Townsend has been training in Aikido since 1989. His last promotion to Yon-dan (4th degree black belt) was in May 2017. He started his first shool in Raleigh in 1998 but has been teaching at UNC Chapel Hill since 2004.

About the lesson

All new students do not need to wear a uniform. A tshirt and long sweatpants are best. All new students can particiapate for 4 classes before making a decision. This is normally 2 weeks of practice. The first month will be reviewing all basic steps in kata, weapons and self-defense.

I have worked with all ages from 9 to 70.

Always look for a martial art that interests you and fits your personality. Make sure your teacher allows your to ask questions and trains you properly.

UNC students attedend the WSAF (World Sport Aikido Federation) international tournament in San Diego, CA in July 2019. The Aikido seminars and tournament were outstanding and meeting players from Russia, Japan, Great Britain and beyond was very enjoyable.

Here are the current cost for lessons:

Club semester Dues: $40

Tomiki Aikido of the Americas Yearly Dues: $30 or $60

You will be required to purchase a uniform.
