About Colleen

I have worked many different kinds of interpreting jobs:

-K-12 interpreting (neurotypical and SPED)

-Cleveland Indians (Guardians) events

-Cleveland Metroparks Zoo events

-Red Hat Society events

-Townhall meetings

-multiple collegiate level classes

-created an ASL club at the high school I previously worked at with 30+ neurotypical students that signed up and participated.

I am extremely passionate about the community, culture and language. It was something I never grew up with and was given the opportunity to take a college level ASL course and completely fell in love with it.

I worked in an intensive needs special education unit for the last two years, so my job was definitely more hands on. I created my own lesson plans and taught my student 500+ words over the course of one school year.

I am a licensed Interpreter for the Deaf. I have worked K-12, collegiate and community levels over the last four years.

About the lesson

Having a "get to know you meeting" to establish goals and see where we can start based on previous knowledge.

I have worked with neurotypical students as well students with mild to significant cognitive delay.

Make sure you have goals set and are transparent with your teacher so they can help you reach them. ASL is different and is flexible, so you will have teachers with different styles of signing. Not every Interpreter/ Teacher of the Deaf will sign the exact same!

I loved working with my student, who had significant cognitive delay. Teaching her signs everyday and practicing together was something I will always remember. Some signs were difficult for her to remember and physically sign but when it clicked, it was the best feeling for both of us.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Understanding the realistic timeline. They should remember that they will be learning a new language and becoming fluent can take years. Ask yourself, "how long am I will to work at this to become conversational/fluent?"
