About Mitchell
Hi! I am a former student of Ohlone College, the San Francisco Bay Area's premier interpreting school, partnered with Gallaudet University. I assess a tutee's competency of sign production by means of the Five Parameters of ASL: Hand shape, palm orientation, location, movement, and non-manual markers. Feedback and help is oriented to one or more of these areas when seeking to develop signing skills and vocabulary.
In terms of practicing signing reception (watching a signer tell a story, for example), I may sign a word or sentence in various ways to encourage understanding MEANINGS and CONCEPTS rather than individual signs connected to English words. While it may not be a requirement for the classroom, I also help my tutees interpret their signed homework and voicing into plain English as a study technique, among many others! 🤟🏼
I enjoy meeting people of all kinds that choose to study ASL, be it family, business, or personal. As a hearing person in the larger ASL community, I've gained a deeper understanding of what kinds of social justice issues pop up in ASL communities including: what it means to be hearing in a Deaf setting, the quality of ASL interpreting, how educational backgrounds and resources affect a deaf person, and more. Therefore I deliver my services through a lens of social justice and openly communicate my experiences to fellow hearing allies in hopes of sharing my journey through the highs and lows of learning to navigate in different communities of deafness.
I began teaching with my background in music. I'm a classical violinist and began teaching the violin to myself when I was 9! The same pedaogy I've learned from music, I've applied to ASL:
-Starting with warmups, as not to overwhelm ourselves
-Use of slow practice and repetition
-Listening to/Watching something done in different ways
-Isolating problem areas and working around it by various methods
Tutoring:
-Took a short term class oriented to learning about peer tutoring
-Received a Level I Tutor Certificate of Completion for fulfilling CLRA's International Tutor Training Program requirements through the Learning Assistance Department at City College of San Francisco
ASL:
-A.A in Arts and Humanities from City College of San Francisco
-Higher level ASL courses taken at Ohlone College in Fremont, CA including: ASL levels 2-4, linguistics of ASL, Deaf culture, and advanced reception (intro to interpreting)
-Volunteered at the California School for the Deaf, Fremont elementary school department and high school cooking class for 1 year
-Volunteer interpreted for weddings, a memorial, and platform events

Each session with a tutee follows a cycle:
1. Checking in and defining the tasks at hand
2. Tutoring by coaching, mentoring, and role modeling
3. Reviewing, checking for understanding, and preparing a plan
I've worked with ASL students ranging from business professionals, middle school students, students with autism, to a family whose youngest daughter used ASL to supplement with learning.
As a tutor, I would tell students looking to take ASL classes to consider a few things:
-Look into who is teaching the class and see if they have a reputable presence in the ASL community and what their credentials are
-Consider the variables that make your teacher unique; language is fluid and varies depending on factors that make up a person: age, gender, race, place of origin and educational background. Do they also teach with these different views in mind?
-See where communities of Deaf individuals are around you and push yourself to go to gatherings (this is how I became good!). You may find a great teacher within the Deaf community!
A recent event I'm fond of was volunteer interpreting for an event with professional interpreters from the area, including my very first ASL teacher.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-What kind of role is ASL going to play in my life?
-What communities of deafness exist around me? Do they use ASL? Other Total Communication based systems?
-Am I willing to face the uncomfortability of trying to navigate through a culture that is foreign to my own?
-What kinds of rewards are there for people learning sign language or a new language period?
