About Catie

I’ve been tutoring since 2012 when I was working on my BA in mathematics and BS in astrophysics. Though I’m currently working on my PhD in physics, I’ve continued my passion of educating students, both in a classroom setting as well as one-on-one tutoring sessions. I am most adept at helping high school juniors/seniors and college freshmen/sophomores, i.e. calculus and AP/introductory physics.

The hardest part of math & physics is getting students to change the way they think about problems. Instead of teaching them how to do one specific problem, I lead them with questions so that they arrive at the answers themselves. This is incredibly important so that the student can do well on their own, outside of the tutoring room.

I almost failed my own AP physics class and only ended up passing the AP exam through the help of a tutor. She gave me the help and confidence I needed and here I am working on a PhD in the field. I know how important a tutor can be, just as I know how it feels to be unsure of my ability. I strive to be that help to my own students so that they can achieve any goals they have.

After struggling with my own AP physics class and getting rescued by a tutor, I recognized how important the right help could be. Once I realized my passion for physics and math and became comfortable in the subjects, I sought to use my experience to help others.

As a tutor in college, I completed 12 hours of training a semester and reached level III certification for peer learning instructors. In graduate school, I’ve continued tutoring and have started teaching as well. Though the classroom is a different setting than one-on-one tutoring sessions, it’s provided be experience working with many different types of students.

About the lesson

My first goal in working with a student is learn how they’re feeling towards the subject. If students are significantly worried about their ability (which is very common with math/physics) they’ll need more guidance and reassurance than more confident students. Second goal is to see their thought process. It doesn’t help to teach them how to do one exact problem; they need to learn how to ask themselves the right questions.
