About Rob

I bring the ability to teach someone to not simply pass the flight test, but to feel confident with their ability to face the practical challenges of flying an airplane today.

I love watching people learn to fly ... from soloing to passing their flight test, knowing I played a significant role in their success.

I earned my instructor certificate because I'm insatiably curious about things in general. I wanted to know more about flying than what I learned when I earned my private pilot certificate many years ago.

I've been a flight instructor for 40 years. I'm also a former adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

On the more practical side of flying, I've spent most of my career flying business jets and turboprops, in addition to having spent 10 years as an air traffic controller with the FAA.

About the lesson

It begins by showing them the aircraft, explaining a bit of the learning process and most of all, being certain I completely answer their questions.

I also believe it's important to establish a repore with a new student so they'll feel confident asking the myriad of questions they'll have along the way.

A variety of students actually, from young people 17 years of age to older adults and a range of men and women in between.

Don't be shy about changing flight instructors if you don't like thier style. We all teach from the same lesson plans, but some teachers - like doctors - are better at paying attention to the needs of their students than others.

Running into an old student of mine and remembering those first few flying lessons I gave her decades ago. I learned that she went on to earn additional certificates and is now a flight instructor herself.
