About Alexis

I recently graduated so I understand what the classroom environment is like from a student’s perspective. Each professor has a different teaching style and that will not always match a student’s learning style. What I aim to do with each student is teach them according to their learning style so they feel confident in what they are learning. One question may have multiple strategies to get the correct answer and I plan to help my students use the strategy that is most efficient for them.

I do believe understanding comes through application of concepts and students should not only be able to answer one question that is a regurgitation of a definition, but be able to understand WHY. If a students understands WHY something is occurring, then they will be able to successfully and confidently answer any question on the topic they may come across in the classroom.

Like I said, I recently graduated, so I understand the demanding schedule of being a student and even a student-athlete. I competed at the collegiate level so I understand time management and that sometimes you are in a time crunch. I do my best to accommodate all of my students given rigorous academic schedules.

I thoroughly enjoy tutoring because I remember sitting on the other side of the table and being excited when a concept clicked. I have always been a strong supporter of tutoring because it encourages critical thinking. I have been tutoring in the math lab since high school and tutored throughout college.

I enjoy seeing the light bulb go off when students fully understand a concept. When students understand, they get excited about the topic. When a student gets excited they challenge themselves to do more which is wonderful to see. Tutoring is rewarding because I am helping someone else get excited to learn something new.

I have always enjoyed teaching others. I believe in learning the way that best suits the student as I have not always been keen on the teaching style of some classes I have taken. I would start by explaing concepts to others outside of class during free time and then expanded to tutoring on campus.

I was a student very recently and have been tutoring other students for about 5 years. I feel that being a student helps me understand the position of the student I am helping. I also work on clinical research which helps with connecting a concept to the bigger picture.

When I start working with a new student I like to first understand their learning style so I can help them in the way that will benefit them most. I ask them what their goals are and how comfortable they feel with the material. From the start I want students to learn how to study properly.

I have worked with students in elementary school all the way to college. Having a student learn the best way for them is great to start young, and working with younger children is extremely rewarding as they can carry it on with them later into their academic career. As the difficulty of subjects gets higher, tutors are extremely helpful such as students in college.

When looking for a tutor in STEM it is important to find someone who was in a reputable program of the subject you are seeking help with. Ask them what they specialize in and if it matches with what you need. Explain what you need help with so you can make sure they are prepared to explain each concept.

I recently tutored a high school student who is taking a class I took when I was in high school. She was having a hard time with concepts in the class that were difficult when I was taking the class as well. I was able to explain the concept to her so she felt confident completing her assignment. She had a test coming up the next Monday so when I received a text later that week that she got an A, I was estatic.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what they know best and what they do not understand. From there the gaps of knowledge can be filled so they become more confident with the material.

The pricing on my lessons vary with the range of topics I tutor. Before lessons I prepare material so each student can leave with the the concepts we went over and the PDF with the material during the lesson. I try to go beyond just answering questions during a session and helping students consistently work toward a better understanding of the topic outside of sessions as well.
