About Kelly

I'm a Software Engineer working in the Fort Collins area. I'm available to help all ages expand their knowledge on specific subjects with computer science or provide a mentor relationship to help in job or internship searches. I've taken the AP Computer Science test and scored a 5 so I'm comfortable helping high school students with that class.

I've seen the value of tutoring / mentoring firsthand as the student and love giving back that same benefit I received. Computer Science is such a great field to be in, so helping students have a solid understanding of it is extremely rewarding to both parties.

I started teaching in High School by being a section leader for trumpets. I coached other trumpet players in music and really enjoyed doing so. I also tutored AP Calculus back then and enjoyed that as well - I'm way to rusty to tutor on that subject though.

I've worked in the Software Development field for 3 years. I've been a mentor to multiple students over the years and currently mentor college students for computer science.

About the lesson

The first step is exploratory: ask the student questions about what they're struggling with and get a feel for their understanding of the topic and where they need help.

Next is addressing the area of difficulty by working through practice problems, and always guiding them in the right direction as opposed to just telling them the answer. Teaching problem solving and critical thinking skills will build a solid foundation that will last throughout their entire education.

Finally, verify the understanding of the topic and have the student explain in their own words how they arrived to their conclusion and clarify and inconsistencies.

High school and college.

If computer science is something you really enjoy, stick with it because it's an amazing field to be in.

Working with a college student to help find internships by providing resume feedback and tips for interviews; seeing the improvement they had is very uplifting.
