About Reine

My service stands out because I’m always surprising and having fun with my students. Learning can be challenging but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. At the end of every month, I host a virtual school-related game night with the potential of winning various prizes such as cute notebooks, pencils, or erasers. I love incorporating games and creative mini-projects that help students grasp the material better. I also develop personalized lesson plans for each student that put them on the fast track to success!

The best part of my job is seeing students fall in love with learning again. Often, the stress of school can cause students to lose excitement over learning new things. After about a month of one-on-one tutoring, I almost always notice a shift. Due to my personalized lessons, fun learning games, and mini-projects, my students become excited to learn new material and gain more understanding. Learning should be fun and I love seeing it become that to my students!

I started teaching in my freshman year of high school. In my city, there is a program called Saturday Kids’ Club where 1st-5th grade students come to a center every Saturday to be tutored in subjects such as math, science, and english. Every Saturday, I would tutor students with the supervision of teachers and educational professionals. There, I learned how to develop lesson plans, provide constructive feedback, and maintain a strong relationship with the student and their parents.

I have learned from and worked with phenomenal teachers, tutors, and educators that have taught me how to be the best tutor that I can be. Ever since I discovered education was my passion, I have pursued volunteer and educational opportunities that have allowed me to grow as a volunteer and learn from the best. One opportunity that really shaped who I am as a tutor was volunteering with Reading Partners.

I’ve also taken a course from Harvard’s School of Education titled “Family Engagement and Education”. In this course, I learned about the importance of involving parents, extended family, and the community in a child’s educational journey. The knowledge in this course inspired me to involve my student’s parents more.

About the lesson

Before I start tutoring, I like to establish a foundational relationship with the parent and the child. Before the first session, I send a survey to the parents, to fill out with their child, asking baseline questions such as:

What grade is your child in?

From your perspective, what are your child's strengths and weaknesses in learning?

What subject(s) will they need help in?

How does your child learn best?

What do you and your child hope to get out of these tutoring sessions?

This survey is crucial to better understanding the student I am about to work with. During the first session, I build rapport with the student and parent

From then, I develop a personalized lesson plan for the student and continue to adjust it as needed.

I’ve primarily worked with elementary school students that have difficulties in the subjects of english, math, and science. I have chosen to focus on work specifically with these students because the elementary years set the foundation for all the years to come. If there is a shaky elementary foundation, students may have a more difficult time transitioning to middle and high school. Since my students are typically young, I love incorporating fun activities that will keep them engaged.

A recent event that I’m fond of is volunteering at a STEAM night at a local elementary school. I, along with other students from my school, created a booth highlighting the benefits of attending the Health Sciences Academy and pursuing a career in health sciences. The kids were able to learn how the heart works, listen to a heartbeat with my stethoscope, and gain a better understanding of the different careers in healthcare. They also won prizes from different games we played with them. Seeing them learn and become excited about a potential career was so fun!
