About Noelle

Hello! My name is Noelle. I have been a certified New York City Elementary teacher (K-8) and Early Childhood Coordinator (birth through pre-K) for over 17 years, with another 2 years of experience teaching 7th and 8th Grade English in Africa. I have taught all subjects in the Bronx, Washington Heights, Harlem and Brooklyn. I wish to share my knowledge and expertise with adult and student learners. I will design a learning program tailored to your needs and/or your child's grade level. I am passionate about children and enjoy teaching people of all ages, from 0-99 years-old! I offer online and telephonic tutoring.

I love the "AHA! moment" when a student finally understands something that he or she did not understand before!

I first got started teaching right out of college when I became a Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso (French West Africa).  I taught large classes (all boys!) for two years on the 7th and 8th grade level.  It was quite an experience.

I left teaching for a while but returned to it when my child was 4 years-old.  I worked in a Parochial school for two years before joining the NYC Department of Education.

I have been a New York City teacher for 13 years, teaching mostly Kindergarten through 2nd grade.  I also worked with teachers and students in an Early Childhood Center, as the Education Coordinator for 4 years.  Most recently, I worked as a nanny/tutor for 4th Grade twins!

I get to know what my students like and dislike, so that I can create an engaging learning experience.  For example, if tutoring is needed for reading, I make sure to choose texts that relate to what you, the student, like to learn about.

Once I know what you like, I will listen to you read, or look at your writing samples (if you want help with writing) to determine what areas to focus on.  For reading, I will teach you strategies for figuring out words you don't know.  For writing, I will give you pointers on how to write for different purposes, how to structure formal writing and how to create stories.

Then we will decide on several assignments, or a period of time, for the tutoring, at the end of which I will assess your progress.  I do assess and give feedback along the way, as well, so you know how you are doing.  We will go from there, to see if further tutoring is indicated.

I have worked with all kinds of students from all different backgrounds and cultures, many for whom English was not their first language.  I have taught K-8th grade, with most of the focus on the early grades (K-2).  I have worked with families across the economic spectrum.  I have worked with some students with special needs, but not taught as a special education teacher.

Look for someone you feel will encourage you to work on what is hard for you. Think about what you want your teacher to help you with.  Be as specific as you can. Please know that practice makes perfect and that your skills will improve as you use them more and more!

I am proud of everyone who is peacefully participating in the Black Lives Matter and George Floyd events.  I believe that these marches, protests, and vigils will change how black and brown people are treated in America.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Questions to think about:

What do I need help with, or what do I want to learn to do better?

What length do I want my lessons to be? (An hour is average)

How much time am I willing to spend on assignments outside of the lesson?

How many lessons do I want to start with? (Remember, the first lesson may be mostly about getting to know you and figuring out what you need help with.)
