About Chris
As an educator, I am guided by my belief that learning is an act of organizing; that a good classroom with active learning and engagement is a community in its own right. People and communities are transformed when they gain literacy in any number of areas, and the lack of equitable education in our public institutions is a deep injustice. As a social studies teacher, I believe that students, through their own genius and communal spirit, can bring true change to our society when they learn to advocate their view through historically informed rhetoric.
I have spent the past year teaching 9th and 10th grade Global History and Geography at Lower Manhattan Arts Academy (LoMA). I joined this position after graduating from Teachers College at Columbia University with an MA in Secondary Social Studies Education. I have lengthy experience in curating reading and writing assignments for students of various literacy levels thanks to working with my SPED and ENL co-teachers. I have thorough organizational skills which I have developed over months of grading, tracking, and scaffolding work for over 100 students across five classes. I will create culturally responsive and historically informed lesson plans and review strategies that will provide my pupils the space to develop themselves as global citizens and community advocates. Before LoMA, I was a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast. As a cultural ambassador for the U.S. Embassy, I co-taught grades 7-12 at a science-focused secondary school. I planned lessons and worked alongside teachers in both English and French. My main focus was college readiness in the English-speaking world and modern US history and culture. This experience taught me countless lessons, but above all it taught me how to be holistic. I learned how to balance cultural education with academic rigor all while servicing each student and co-teacher to their individual needs.
My main specialties and qualifications as a social studies teacher include the following:
-Master of Arts in Teaching of Social Studies from Teachers College at Columbia University
-New York State certification in Teaching of Social Studies, Grades 7-12
-Bachelor of Arts in Politics with minors in History and French from Bates College
-6 Years of Formal and Informal Experience of Tutoring and Teaching
-Extensive training and experience with ENL and SPED children, particular in writing instruction and reading comprehension
Working with young people is unmatched. However simple the worksheet or complex the thesis statement, seeing a student make intellectual growth in real time is a sacred activity. Since I myself was in middle school I've been obsessed with social studies because I loved learning about how groups of people made the world what it is today. In my own ways, I grew as a person because I saw these descriptions and stories of people across space and time as fully real persons overcoming challenges. Now that I am a licensed social studies educator, I get to combine both passions. I get to help students become more actualized in their reading, writing, and speaking skills as we teach each other about the social realities of our shared history.
As a tutor, I will offer my pupils an hands-on, detailed, and fun learning experience. I have become highly educated in teaching social studies because, for me, the subject is endlessly engaging. I want to bring that same sense of enjoyment to my students so that they too can become genuinely excited to improve their literacy skills. As we practice our writing with prompts and work on memorization exercises, we will discover topics that thrill, anger, amaze, and inspire us to become informed citizens.
