About Seth

My name is Seth. I have more than 10 years of classroom teaching experience, teaching students from middle school through adult ESL and college writing. I have worked as a Reading Specialist in grades 2nd through 6th.

I speak (and read) Spanish, French and Portuguese. I speak Hindi at an Intermediate level. I am a native English speaker (northeast United States).

I feel lucky to witness the epiphanies, meaningful struggles and breakthroughs involved in learning and literacy.

My parents are both teachers, although they teach woodworking. I think I have always known that teaching is my calling, and I feel very lucky to have been able to follow my passion.

After studying Linguistics, earning a Bachelor's of Arts from University of Massachusetts at Amherst, I formalized my choice to teach by working in a public school in Andalucia, Spain for a school year. Once back in the United States, I enrolled at Boston University, earning a Master's of Ed. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, or TESOL.

I worked first as substitute teacher, ESL summer program teacher, and then teacher of record in Boston Public Schools and several nearby districts. I moved to Houston in 2012 and worked in HISD for 6 years, teaching high school English, Reading and ESL.

I taught high school English, Reading and ESL here in Houston for six years, and middle school Social Studies and ESL for two years. I have studied in Paris and Guadeloupe, and taught English in Spain for a year. I have been a Reading Tutor for grades 3 to 8 since 2019.

I am certified in Texas to teach English and Reading, ESL and Social Studies. I speak and read Spanish, Portuguese, French and Hindi. I am currently learning Arabic and Scottish Gaelic.

About the lesson

I talk with my students, allow them to get to know me while I get to know them. It's important, especially for the middle grades through adult, for a student to 'own' their learning: to understand the purpose, the process and the point. This means we discuss the student's interests, their goals, their strengths and their difficulties. It's important to know what they want and of course what the parents are looking for.

I have worked with students in AP English classes, lots of English Language Learners from many backgrounds, as well as College Prep English 1 and ‘regular’ Academic English 1. I have taught Reading and Social Studies to middle school ESOL students, as well as working as a Small Group Specialist, teaching Phonics, Reading, Science Math and Writing to Elementary students, Grades 1 to 5.

Details

As a tenured, certified educator, I believe my skills and experience merit a professional level of pay. However, I am open to adjusting my prices depending on material, preparation and hours per week. For instance, I may charge $35/30 minutes ($50/hour) for a one-time intensive Writing Workshop, but I am open to adjusting rates for ongoing sessions with the same client.
