About Bernice

(PIANO) Bernice Cooperman has been a piano teacher and has taught in Freehold NJ for over thirty years. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School and holds a degree in Music Education from Teachers Collrge, Columbia University, New York City.

I teach children from 8 years old to adults. My method of teaching is adapted to each individual's needs and tastes.

Classical music is my primary concern, 'though I also teach popular music to students who are interested.

Some of my students have participated in competitions and have performed in recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

After graduation from High School a few of my students decided to Major in Music and were accepted at excellent schools.

I belong to various local music teachers organizations and have been a Member of the Board of Judges of The National Guild of Piano Teachers. I also belong to the Shore Music Educators Association (a local organization) where I have evaluated students for various scholarships and Honor recitals.I teach students of all ages from beginners and advanced.I try to make lessens interesting so that they can enjoy music for the rest of their lives.

I enjoy teaching and seeing students progress, getting pleasure out of playing great music.

I lived in an apartment in the Bronx, New York, and started teaching my neighbor's children when I was 16 years old.

I belong to two teachers' organizations where students are able to play in recitals. They often have competitions where I evaluate students. I have also played in recitals and played duets with other piano teachers.

About the lesson

Before starting o new student, I invite him/her free of charge (with parent for non-adult, if possble) to get student"s interests and what they expect from taking piano lessons.

At first I ask what type of piano they have at home and how often it is tuned. If they had lessons before, I ask them to bring the music they have studied and if they can play part of a piece that they enjoy. We can continue from there.

If the student has not taken lessons before, I talk a little about how I teach and what they can expect. I do teach theory with the music to help them better understand the music they are playing.The student always comes away from the first lesson knowing more about the keyboard and how to play a short melody that they are familiar with.

I have taught students of all ages from beginners to advanced. Some have majored in music in college and later became performers or teachers themselves.

I belong to a teachers' organization who, for the past twenty years, has had what is called "Monsters' Concerts" where 10 grand pianos were on stage of an auditorium and students played duets, two at a piano. Students were 10 years and up with some teachers also playing. A teacher was conducting this performance.
