About Michael

-A decade of electric guitar experience

-Genres ranging from blues, to rock, to metal, to progressive

-Graduated from NYU with a Masters degree in Music Technology

-Working as a Sound Engineer for live performance; records, edits, and produces music in spare time

-I am more interested in helping new students learn the instrument and how to play, but am willing to help students of all ages and experience if possible

It was as simple as my friend telling me I would be a good teacher when I was going over some very basics of guitar with him.

I listen well and can provide valuable feedback and insight, and it is in my blood to have thorough explanations or visuals to learn and educate more about things.

-1 year of lessons followed by 9 years of self-teaching

-Bachelor of Art in Music, and Masters in Music Technology

-Played many live shows and worked with many unique musicians

-Working currently as a live sound engineer (hooking up equipment, signal flow, mixing) for several venues

About the lesson

-Determine where they are at experience-wise

-Find out their end goal for wanting to learn or improve on the instrument

-Take it from there, becoming familiar with songs that the students are interested in while providing accompanying theory (not necessarily as the lesson but as supplemental information, depending on the student)

-Work with problems that arise as they happen, such as technique, particular styles of playing, and other cool things!

You don't need to know that you want to play this instrument for the rest of your life. What you learn now is as important as what you learn in 10 or even 20 years. What you do want though is a person who is enthusiastic about the same instrument and music as you, as it turns would could be a drab lesson into exciting musical shenanigans every time. I know that's how it worked for me.

I recently went to see Eric Clapton, Jimmy Vaughan, and Gary Clarke Jr. in concert with my parents at Madison Square Garden. Thanks mom and dad!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I know I didn't think much of it! Just signed up with the first teacher I found and got extremely lucky that he imparted so much of his love of the craft into me and shaped my future subconsciously.

But if you really needed to think about some questions, I would say:

-what do you specifically want to learn on the instrument (if you don't know, that is perfectly ok! That is what we're supposed to help you do!)

-why are you learning the instrument? (I can tell this story in jest now, but I picked up guitar after spending way too much time on Guitar Hero games and my father and grandfather begging me to take real lessons, and it worked out phenomenally)

-are you ready to learn one of the most bad-ass instruments ever?

Details

$20-30/hr for things within my realm of expertise, depending on location and transportation. I will try to accomodate all students. If there is something they would like to know that I am not particularly versed on, I will look into it for the next lesson, but it will likely be an extra $5-10/hr. There will be no surprise jumps in fee, and the student will be informed if the next lesson may cost slightly more due to their requests.
