Her creative materials, intimate knowledge of how the brain holds on to a foreign language, and limitless enthusiasm helped me learn Italian so well, I had no trouble at all navigating Rome's mass transit system, negotiating deals at the markets, and understanding the ins-and-outs of Italian culture.
