Donatella Marcovigi

I started teaching in Ravenna, my hometown in Italy, working with middle school and high school students. That experience allowed me to develop a strong foundation in teaching Italian grammar, literature, and language structure.

Over time, I began teaching Italian to foreign students as well, which led me to specialize in helping non-native speakers understand and use Italian in a practical and natural way.

After many years of experience, I expanded my work to teaching internationally and online, focusing on helping students gain confidence in speaking, comprehension, and real-life communication in Italian.

I have a degree in Italian Grammar and Literature from the University of Bologna, one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

This academic training gave me a deep and structured understanding of the Italian language, its grammar, literature, and historical development. In addition to my formal education, I have more than 25 years of experience teaching Italian to foreign students, which has allowed me to refine effective methods for helping learners understand the language and gain confidence in speaking it.

My approach combines strong academic preparation with many years of practical teaching experience, enabling me to adapt lessons to different levels and learning goals.

About the lesson

My typical process with a new student is simple and personalized.

First, I like to have a short introductory conversation. This helps me assess the student’s level in Italian—especially their comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, and ability to interact naturally. During this conversation I also try to understand their goals: for example, whether they want to travel to Italy, move there, improve conversation, or strengthen grammar.

After this initial assessment, I propose an ideal program based on their level and objectives. I usually suggest a structured package of classes, with clear goals and materials designed to progressively build confidence and fluency.

Before each class, students receive materials and topics so they can prepare and feel more comfortable participating. During the lessons, I combine conversation, practical exercises, vocabulary development, and targeted explanations when needed.

My goal is always to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable speaking and gradually become more confident using Italian in real situations.

My advice is to choose a teacher who is both a native speaker and professionally trained in teaching the language. Being a native speaker alone is not enough to teach effectively; a qualified teacher should also have academic training in the language and a solid understanding of grammar, structure, and teaching methodology.

It is also important to look for someone with real teaching experience. A professional teacher knows how to assess a student’s level, create a structured learning path, and guide the student step by step toward clear results.

Today there are many people offering language lessons online who are not professional teachers. For this reason, I recommend choosing someone who is certified, experienced, and able to offer a clear program rather than improvised lessons. This makes a significant difference in the quality of learning and in the progress a student can achieve.
