About Mikoto

Hi! My name is Mikoto and I am a freshman psychology major at the University of Miami and have lived in Miami my whole life. I am an alumna of Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Coconut Grove, where I am a lifer! My parents are both Japanese so our household is/was always strictly Japanese, so I am perfectly fluent in both Japanese and English. Learning a new language can be very difficult, especially Japanese, a unique and foreign language, but that is exactly why it is so important to start at a young age. Science suggests that kids learn new languages and information most efficiently up to age 13. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with young kids (ages 3-6) at YMCA Japan for every summer since high school, where I teach English and Western culture to Japanese students. Each year, I am amazed by their ability to learn so quickly! That is exactly why I have decided to begin Japanese lessons for young kids, ages 3-12, where students are provided a loving and encouraging environment with no prior knowledge required! My goal is to teach young stars both the Japanese language and its culture, and set them up for a successful path in life. There is no loss in opening a new door for your child - just more opportunities for them!

As I stated in the description, I have had the opportunity to volunteer at YMCA Japan each summer since high school. I work with young Japanese students (ages 3-6) and teach them the English language and Western culture. The best part is that I am always learning from them while being able to share with them my knowledge! Throughout the years I've learned what types of approach are most effective when teaching young kids. Also, as a psychology major, I am learning more and more about child and adolescent behavior each day. I am confident that I can put this learned knowledge to use during lessons to provide high quality Japanese education for young kids and am so excited to begin!

About the lesson

The first "lesson" will involve an open conversation with both the student and the parent. We will discuss goals and any questions that may arise. Mainly, I would like to get to know the student better and decide what type/structure of lessons they would learn best in! The most important part of starting new is allowing the child to WANT to learn, not be FORCED to learn, which I believe I can achieve through my fun, welcoming lessons!

I have worked with Japanese students (ages 3-6) where I teach English and Western culture. I also babysit 2 one-year-olds every few weeks, so I also have ongoing experience with very young children (lessons begin at age 3 however)!
