About Caitlin

I make custom lessons, drawing from multiple textbook series. Can prepare students for the N5 and N4 examinations.

I took Japanese in high school and college. I studied abroad in Japan over one summer. I have been tutoring beginning Japanese for 4 years.

About the lesson

To make lessons more interesting, I like to know why a student want to study Japanese- interest in anime, food, culture, martial arts etc. Then I can add in vocabulary to allign with student's interests.

It's also helpful to know if the student has any special needs and is a auditory vs visual learner.

I have worked with students and adults. I have worked with middle school students who want to test into a higher level of Japanese at the local high school, students who are taking Japanese in high school/college who need additional help, and adults who want to know some Japanese for travel purposes.

Ask what textbook series they use and what examination levels their teaching lines up with. (There are 5 examinations to be considered fluent at a native speaker level. Level 4 and 5 are introductory Japanese. Level 3 is intermediate Japanese, and level 1 and 2 are advanced Japanese.) A lot of times intro or intermediate are used in a very loose way.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
With their native language, do they have any learning issues, such as trouble with spelling. How much time can they devote to studying outside of class.
