About Lauren

As a kid I really struggled with math and was always afraid of asking questions because I didn't want to sound dumb to my peers. All that did was hurt me and my ability to learn, that is why I think it is so important to build a relationship with students to where they feel comfortable saying that they don't understand or are struggling with a certain concept. I always tell my students in class, the more you communicate with me the more I can help you!

Currently I am a credentialed multiple subject 6th grade teacher in a K-6 school for 3 years now. I just connect with math most out of all subjects because I understand students struggle.

What I enjoy the most about the work I do is when students have that moment of clarity and understand something they have been struggling with. I love to hear students say "that's it?" like they didn't realize how easy it was to understand. All it takes is someone sitting down and taking the time to work with you.

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher! I can remember telling people in fifth grade that I wanted to be a teacher and always hearing them say "oh you'll change your mind" made me want to do it even more. I struggled with math as a student and it made me very hard on myself until I had a teacher who took the time to sit down with me and explain what I wasn't understanding. It was because of him I am the teacher I am today, he believed in me when I wouldn't believe in myself and I always told myself I wanted to be that for someone else when I grow up.

Currently I am a 6th grade teacher with a multiple subject credential. I have been teaching for 3 years now and have run student intervention programs 2 year prior.

About the lesson

When working with a new student I think it is important to make a connection with the student. I know when I struggled with math I was very closed off to having strangers help me because I didn't want them to think I didn't understand. I like to get to know them and ask them questions to build the connections to where they do feel comfortable asking questions when it comes time to get to the math.

I have worked with all kinds of students from all different backgrounds. The school I currently work at is pretty diverse with English Language Learners and students who are below grade level.

My advice to students looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise is to be open to the idea of learning something that you struggle with, I know it is hard to not get frustrated because I have been there. Together we will work through this to help you build your knowledge so that you can have the confidence in yourself that I have for you.

A recent event that I am fond of was dropping off my students grade level picture. I wrote them all a note and hand delivered it to them and it absolutley made my day how excited we were to see each other again since the social distance started in our area.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about the exact areas that they struggle with because it is easier to solve a step of a problem instead of the entire thing. Lets start small and solve problem by problem :)
